Research shows cervical cancer death rates higher

According to a survey carried out by Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, just under a quarter (22.7%) of women are too embarrassed to attend smear tests and over two thirds don't think the tests reduce a women's risk of getting cervical cancer. In the United States, 12,820 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year and 4,120 women die from the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Meanwhile, many of those women who are dying from cervical cancer are above age of 65, a cut-off point where the cancer screening guidelines no longer recommend women with cervixes be regularly screened for cervical cancer.

Dr. Ahmedin Jemal, vice president of surveillance and health services research at the American Cancer Society, said the society's studies have found that people in areas where cancer deaths are higher than average suffer from a variety of problems that make these deaths more likely.

A new cancer study shows fewer Americans have been dying in recent years.

The researchers found that black women have a mortality rate of 10.1 per 100,000.

The likelihood of developing cervical cancer can be increased by tobacco usage, stress, giving birth before the age of 17, three or more pregnancies, long-term use of oral contraceptives and poor diet choices.

Many different cancer-related awareness campaigns occur throughout the year.

Differences in death rates should also be a red flag that certain communities aren't getting the benefits of screening, early detection, and specialized treatments that others are, he says-especially for cancers with normally high survival rates, like breast and prostate cancers. With routine screening, cervical cancer is preventable. The new death rate for black women in the USA is on part with that of developing countries. Most cases are caused by sexually transmitted infections with human papillomavirus (HPV), for which there is a vaccine. Every day in the United Kingdom nine women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and three women will die from the disease. Cervical cancer vaccines exist, and the disease is slow spreading, easily detectable, and treatable-when women have access to adequate medical care. Surprisingly, new research from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Research Network found that a subset of tumors did not show evidence of HPV infection, confirming that some cervical cancers are caused by genetic and other factors. Among women, particularly, HPV can cause cervical cancer.

Cancer, the No 2 cause of death in the U.S., has always been tracked by health officials, but existing databases had largely measured such statistics on state or national levels.
