Mexicans Are Not Happy With a 'Vanity Fair' Cover Featuring Melania Trump

Days after President Donald Trump began a public feud with the Mexican government over funding for his proposed border wall, his wife, former supermodel Melania Trump, appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair Mexico. Newly-minted first lady Melania Trump graces the cover in a Douglas Friedman-shot photo, with a cover line that promises to reveal how she deals with her presidential husband and how she may be the next Jackie Kennedy.

Given the recent tensions between Presidents Peña Nieto and Trump, Twitter commenters called the timing of Mrs. Trump's magazine cover for Vanity Fair Mexico "awkward" and "ironic". Both the photo and accompanying interview originally appeared in GQ magazine. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has repeatedly refused to finance the project and canceled a planned meeting scheduled for next week with Trump.

The issue comes at a time of strained relations between the US and Mexico, due in large part to President Trump's continued insistence on building a physical wall at the border of the two countries.

If this was the assumption, Vanity Fair Mexico fell victim to that old adage about "u" and "me". "Apologize to Mexico for this stupidity", wrote one of the more polite Twitter posts.

Social media users expressed their opinions about the cover.

The confrontation between the two countries has lit huge concern for the Mexican economy, and seen a diplomatic crisis emerge of epic proportions and Trump-Mexico (rather than US/Mexico) relationship are said to be at a new low. Following the release of her GQ interview, Melania took to Facebook to discredit the profile.

The new First Lady appears on the cover of the magazine in a pose as though she is eating from a bowl filled with jewellery.
