Donald Trump: 'US President is a negotiator, not Terminator' - Mexican billionaire, Slim

Trump moves to build wall and restrict refugee entry into US during first week as President

President Donald Trump has decided he will seek to pay for the wall on the US's southern border by imposing a 20 percent tax on imports from Mexico and as part of a larger comprehensive tax reform plan, the White House said Thursday.

Mr Trump appeared to try to defuse the spat between the two countries on Friday, saying: "Great respect for Mexico, I love the Mexican people". The discussion capped a week that saw relations between the neighboring nations plunge into the biggest diplomatic crisis in decades as Pena Nieto vowed that Mexico will never pay for the border barrier.

The Mexican president has repeatedly said Mexico would not pay for the border wall.

Business magnate Carlos Slim called for "national unity" in the face of Mr Trump's hostility and said the country should have a measured response "without getting angry but without surrendering". "And you have to understand what I'm doing is good for the United States".

Mr Trump later presented the scrapped plan as a mutual agreement.

One of President Donald Trumps goals is to make the United States safer and stronger by reducing illegal immigration. "That's really going to provide the funding", Spicer said, referring to a 20% tax.

Diageo profits boosted by Brexit and Scotch sales
The maker of Johnnie Walker and Crown Royal saw top-line sales rise 4.4% for the six months ended December 31, 2016 on volume growth of 1.8%.

He's working on building a wall along the Mexico border, but the challenge will be the final costs. Mexico has long insisted it will not pay for such a project.

On his first full day as president, he told members of the intelligence community gathered at CIA headquarters that the USA should have taken Iraq's oil for "economic reasons", given America's efforts in the country, adding, "But, OK, maybe you'll have another chance".

Trump also made clear he is willing to throw billions of dollars at a problem that has mostly been fixed, paying for ostensible solutions that won't do much good: construction of a wall and the hiring of 5,000 new Border Patrol officers, as well as many additional Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. But Putin has also been chafing under USA and European sanctions imposed by President Obama over Russia's invasion of Crimea and the computer hacking of Democratic party email accounts during the campaign.

He suggested that Mexico could say, "OK, I'm not going to stop Central Americans any more" and added: "Now if our two countries aren't friends any more, that is a card we could play to increase the pressure". Look, we can not lose our companies to Mexico or any other place and then have them make the product and just send it across our borders free.

Slim called for a "modern, not protectionist" national program of substituting imported products, the vast majority of which come from the United States. "We want to have a very stable, very solid Mexico". "The US needs Mexican workers", he said.

One week into office, President Donald Trump was trying to clean up his first worldwide incident.
