Petition to cancel Trump's visit to United Kingdom hits 1 million signatures

Nearly two million Britons have signed a petition demanding that the government cancels a planned State Visit to the United Kingdom by President Donald Trump.

In a letter to The Times, he said it was unprecedented for a U.S. president to be given a state visit in their first year in the White House and questioned whether Mr Trump was "specially deserving of this exceptional honour".

However, it is unlikely the state visit invitation will be withdrawn.

It was the second most popular petition ever on the parliamentary website, after one calling for a second referendum on membership of the European Union drew over 4 million signatures past year.

The Parliament debate is scheduled to be held February 20.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson attacked Donald Trump's "divisive and wrong" travel ban, as he faced a grilling from MPs on Monday evening (30 January).

The executive order, which shut down the United States refugee programme for 120 days and halted all immigration from Somalia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya and Yemen for 90 days, prompted thousands of Londoners to march on Downing Street on Monday evening.

Mr Trump's sweeping executive order for "extreme vetting" means no visas are being issued for 90 days to migrants or visitors from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

More than 1.6 million people in the United Kingdom have signed a petition asking the government to cancel President Donald Trump's state visit, according to NBC News.

May was the first foreign official to visit the White House after Trump's inauguration.

Norman Smith, BBC News Assistant Political Editor, confirmed early in the morning that Downing Street would not be cancelling the new president's visit: "The invitation has been issued and accepted".

Outrage is growing over Trump's immigration crackdown with tens of thousands of protesters gathering in London and other British cities on Monday night to demonstrate against the ban and planned state visit.

Should Donald Trump be received by the queen?

"Of course I agree with the Prime Minister that our relationship with the U.S.is absolutely critical and I think that everybody will accept that the President should pay a visit to the U.K.", Ricketts said.

"To be clear, the prime minister extended an invitation on behalf of the Queen - and she was very happy to do so. Every sign is that it is a Muslim ban, based upon the words of mister Trump himself, when he called it such in his campaign", the Conservative peer said.
