'A Dog's Purpose' animal cruelty footage reported to have been faked
The video went viral days before "A Dog's Purpose" was set for theatrical release. Thankfully, it looks like a previously released video that appeared to show a dog on the set of the film A Dog's objective being abused may have been edited to make things look far worse than they actually were, according to a new report.
Earlier this week, Variety (via Vulture) ran a guest column by American Humane CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert to discuss her company's investigation into the treatment of the dogs on the set of A Dog's objective.
Additionally, American Humane says the investigator notes that the dog was not forced to swim, and the scene was stopped after the dog showed signs of stress. Eyewitnesses report that the dog wanted to go back in the water.
According to the investigation and eye-witness reports, however, the video "was deliberately edited for the goal of misleading the public and stoking outrage".
An independent investigation into the leaked video showing a German shepherd, Hercules, being forced into a pool of water while filming the movie found that no animal abuse occurred on set, Buzzfeed reports.
In addition, the dog was immediately assisted out of the water following the incident, and received an examination shortly after.
"The dog was selected for his love of the water, and had been professionally trained and conditioned for the water scenes over the course of six weeks, using positive training techniques", the news release from American Humane states.
The group said the outside expert, whose name was withheld because of the public outcry following the video's release, found it to be a misrepresentation of events.
In a news release issued Friday, American Humane said the report's findings confirmed "that no animals were harmed in those scenes and numerous preventative safety measures were in place". Producers and stars of the movie rushed to deny wrongdoing. Who may have leaked the video wasn't addressed in the report, and American Humane doesn't know who is responsible, he said. American Humane agreed that the "handling of the dog in the first scene in the video should have been gentler and signs of stress recognized earlier", but explained that the production was adjusted and proceeded without incident.
