'Dripping' new trend among teens who vape, researchers say
A new study finds that one in four teens that use electronic cigarettes have tried "dripping" liquid nicotine onto the heating coils of the e-cigs, which results in thicker clouds of vapor.
With traditional e-cigarettes, e-liquid in a cartridge is heated up electronically, but with "dripping" users pull apart the device and pour drops of e-liquid directly onto the coil and quickly inhale.
"Of concern, existing evidence, while limited, suggests that dripping e-liquids may lead to higher levels of non-nicotine toxicant emissions", according to the study.
Krishnan-Sarin said more research is needed to figure out if dripping is something tried once or occasionally, or if kids regularly drip - a question not asked in the survey.
"The teen brain has been shown especially sensitive to nicotine", Krishnan-Sarin said. Most often, teens did this to produce thicker clouds of vapor, though they sometimes tried dripping to enhance flavors of the liquid nicotine or to heighten the feeling of smoke inhalation in the throat or lungs. Reporting in the journal Pediatrics, researchers call for an investigation into the "toxicity" of dripping and its effects on youth.

Due to the many health concerns regarding vaping, the FDA has chose to regulate e-cigarettes the same way it does conventional tobacco products, though the new rules have yet to be released. Normally, you'd use the e-cigarette's mouthpiece to inhale the nicotine vapor. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced in May 2016 that it would begin regulating all tobacco products made after February 2007, when the e-cigarettes industry began to grow. In general, the process of vaping relies on the e-cigarette's wick (passed through a coil), and tank. Also, more than 26 percent of them reported employing an alternative technique, called dripping.
Instructional guides and videos for dripping can be found on the Internet, the study authors said in background notes.
"The other thing is, nicotine is addictive", Carpenter said.
"I didn't know what to expect", Krishnan-Sarin said. Users can modify their e-cigarettes for dripping, or they can buy atomizers built specifically for dripping.
