Trump promises Erdogan US committed to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

The visit was decided during a 45-minute telephone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan late on Tuesday, according to officials from Erdogan's office.

The officials did not say if the Turkish president, who had previously criticised the then-candidate for his plans to ban Muslims entry the USA - he also called for his name to be removed from Trump Towers Istanbul - raised the issue of the travel ban from seven predominantly Muslim nations during the 45-minute call.

On Aug. 24, 2016, the Turkish Air Force, with the support of the coalition aircraft, launched an operation to liberate the city of Jarabulus from the IS militants in northern Syria, near Aleppo.

Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally and part of the US -led coalition against Islamic State, has repeatedly said it wants to be part of the operation to liberate Raqqa but does not want the YPG, which is part of the SDF alliance, to be involved.

Trump and Erdogan also discussed a long-standing Turkish call for the creation of safe zones in Syria, the refugee crisis and the fight against terror groups, the officials said, without elaborating. It later said that 58 IS fighters had been killed in the al-Bab operations so far.

Texas governor says securing border shouldn't harm trade
The DHS head talked about another recent controversy too - the rocky rollout of the travel ban from seven Muslim-majority countries.

Erdogan for his part requested that Washington "stand with Turkey" in its struggle against the Gulen movement and not to extend support to Syrian Kurdish fighters.

However, the battle for Al Bab has proved the toughest yet of the Turkish incursion, with the army suffering increasing casualties and Mr Erdogan complaining Ankara has been left alone. The US president said during the conversation that he sees Turkey as a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally and a partner in the global war against ISIS terror.

Erdogan also wished Trump success during his term as the U.S. President, the statement added.

Meanwhile, Turkish sources said that the head of the CIA, Mike Pompeo, will visit the Turkish capital Ankara on Thursday.

Erdogan accuses members of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), which opposes the executive presidency, of links to the PKK, deemed a terrorist organization by the European Union and United States.
