CFL's Roughriders deny working out QB Johnny Manziel

"The rules regarding the [negotiating list] are outlined in our by-laws", a league official said.

It appears that Johnny Manziel has taken his first step back toward returning to pro football.

Manziel, who has publicly stated that he wants to make an NFL comeback after he was dropped by the Browns previous year, worked out for the Canadian Football League's Saskatchewan Roughriders in Florida last month, according to a 3DownNation.com story published by the Hamilton Spectator in Ontario. "Therefore that player could not be contacted by, worked out by, or negotiate with another club unless consent is given".

Manziel, whose partying ways have made more headlines than his on-field performances, played two seasons with the Cleveland Browns before being released in 2016. Probably not. For that matter, Johnny Manziel might not have known either. In that same lengthy Instagram post, Manziel wrote in part: "Broken, Humbled, but for once in my life thankful for that day and 18 so far sober with a clear head on my shoulders".

In a statement, the CFL said that the Roughriders denied that they worked out Manziel.

One thing that is known is that Manziel wants to play football again.

Israeli Knesset passes West Bank outposts bill
Emboldened by the Trump administration, the Israeli government is expanding settlement construction at an alarming new rate. But coalition chairman David Bitan told the Times of Israel the vote would "definitely" take place on Monday.

In College, Manziel was the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy.

Come to think of it, Manziel would be a prototypical CFL quarterback - well-suited for the league's wide-open style.

Many have written off Johnny Manziel as a troubled young man that blew his chance as a professional career.

Manziel now appears willing to attempt a comeback through the CFL. After being selected 22nd overall by Cleveland in the 2014 National Football League draft, Manziel went on to start just eight games over the next two seasons. 3DownNation then reported that the Riders were using up to 95 players in practice and paying unsigned players between $300 and $1,000 a week, part of a "pre-practice squad".

In a separate statement to ESPN, the CFL said: "We are investigating".
