Flynn's Talks With Russia May Have Broken the Law

US position on Montenegro accession to NATO is early test of Trump willingness to defy Putin's Russia

We already knew Gen. Michael Flynn talked with the Russian Ambassador to the USA on the same day the Obama administration imposed new USA sanctions against Russia. If he tried to undermine USA sanctions, for example, urging Russian Federation not to retaliate because the Trump administration would pursue a more favorable policy, the communications may have been illegal under the Logan Act.

"Obviously every ambassador informs the center [Moscow] about all the contacts he has so the information gets to us, but we are not willing to comment on internal discussions being held in Washington", he added.

Team Trump said these were routine and uncontroversial calls, and Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters Flynn and Kislyak merely spoke to coordinate upcoming conversations between the American and Russian presidents. Having initially denied the claim, a spokesman subsequently sold the newspaper that "while he had no recollection of discussing sanctions, he couldn't be certain that the topic never came up". The FBI, however, is investigating the correspondences between Flynn and Kislyak.

Mr Pence was strident in his defence of Mr Flynn when he appeared on CBS's Face the Nation last month.

Putin announced a day after the sanctions were imposed that there would be no retaliation until Moscow could assess Trump's policies, which increased the officials' concerns about Flynn's conversations.

Joe Root replaces Alastair Cook as England's Test captain
But he has scored well at home, both in The Ashes and in Test cricket generally, averaging almost 60 with the bat in England . After Alastair Cook stepped down last week, the Selectors and I engaged in the proper process to appoint his successor.

The FBI is now investigating Flynn's communication with Kislyak. "But a compelling case can also be made that Flynn violated federal law by collaborating with foreign officials while still a private citizen". That effort appears to be moving ahead, even as many in Washington, including Republicans, have expressed outrage over the assessment that Putin ordered a hacking operation aimed at meddling in the USA election.

"The President and his National Security Advisor have given the Russians the impression that whatever they do, they are not to worry, because the Trump White House will not stand against their aggression", Pelosi said in a statement on Saturday.

Flynn also has been a booster of closer ties with Russian Federation, whose government, under President Vladimir Putin, has been reviled as repressive and corrupt by Democrats and Republicans. A Trump campaign spokesman told me several hours later that Kislyak had also told Flynn that a Trump representative should attend a peace conference on Syria that would take place after the inauguration in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Democrats have since the campaign been raising questions about Flynn, who in 2015 accepted a fee to speak at the 10th anniversary of RT, the English-language broadcaster widely seen as a Russian government propaganda outlet.

The White House has acknowledged that Flynn has had two conversations with Kislyak.
