Samsung's boss questioned again over influence-peddling

A special prosecutor yesterday brought back Samsung Group's Mr Lee Jae Yong for more questioning over various allegations, including bribery, keeping up the pressure on South Korea's biggest business empire.

Lee, described as a key suspect in the scandal, narrowly avoided being formally arrested last month when the prosecutors accused him of bribery involving almost $40 million.

Prosecutors will decide whether to again seek an arrest warrant for Lee by next week.

A spokesperson for the special probe team investigating the wider presidential scandal told reporters Sunday authorities "carried out additional investigations over the last three weeks" and plan to question Lee on additional charges.

The 48-year-old is effectively in control of the conglomerate because his father, Samsung's ailing Chairman Lee Kun-hee, suffered a heart attack in 2014.

Dakota Access, the Texas based consortium behind the Dakota Access Pipeline, defended its right to build on the land by suing the Corps.

It remains uncertain whether prosecutors will again seek an arrest warrant for Lee after failing with their January 19 request.

At the parliamentary hearing, Samsung admitted giving a total of 20.4bn won (£16m; $17.46m) to the two foundations, but denied seeking favours in return.

Lee Jae-yong, the chief of South Korea's largest company, Samsung Electronics, has been questioned by prosecutors for a second time.

Lee also confirmed the company gave a horse and money to help the equestrian career of Choi's daughter but said he now regretted that. The billionaire is accused of participating in payments that Samsung made to a close friend of South Korean President Park Geun Hye in exchange for government support in the firm's succession planning.
