Austrian authorities arrest Hitler lookalike in Nazi dictator's birth town

The 26-year-old was seen in Braunau on Monday (local time) sporting a Hitler moustache, with his hair combed in a similar style and dressed in Nazi-era regalia.

"I have often seen this gentleman in Braunau and wonder if this means something", local media quoted a resident as saying, alongside a picture of the man it said resembled Hitler. Prosecutors have confirmed the report.

"Public glorification of the personality of Adolf Hitler is punishable in any case", Alois Ebner, a spokesperson of the local police department, said, as cited by the Austrian APA news agency.

It also reported that he was later spotted in a local bookstore browsing through magazines about World War Two.

Glorifying Hitler or the Nazis is a criminal offence in Austria, which was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938.

Where to find Facebook's new Weather app
It shows users profiles of people attending upcoming events, people who live nearby, and people who the user works with. It would be found in the place where users can see options such as Friends, Groups, Events and more .

The incident comes amid an ongoing legal dispute over Hitler's birthplace.

The house in which Hitler was born has been the subject of intense debate, with the Austrian government keen to seize the property from the current owner in order to stop it from becoming a shrine for Nazi sympathisers.

Austria's parliament voted in December to buy the building to control how it is used.

Last October, the Austrian authorities made a decision to demolish Hitler's birthplace house to stop it becoming a focal point for neo-Nazis. The abandoned building was recently seized by the Austrian government to prevent it falling into the hands of neo-Nazis.
