Puzder Withdraws Nomination As Labor Secretary

Puzder Testifies

"No matter how you cut it, there is no worse pick for labor secretary than Andrew Puzder, and I'm encouraged my Republican colleagues are starting to agree", the New York Democrat said.

Andy Puzder on Wednesday withdrew his nomination to be President Trump's Labor secretary, avoiding what would have been a rocky confirmation battle.

Puzder, who now serves as CEO of CKE Restaurants, Inc., the parent of Carl's Jr. and Hardee's, has also come under pressure amid revelations he once employed an undocumented immigrant as a housekeeper.

But what ultimately derailed his nomination was the lengthy list of controversies, including allegations of domestic abuse, hiring undocumented workers, and multiple unresolved controversies surrounding his own businesses. Politico obtained and publicly released a copy of the episode Wednesday. "They're always polite, they always upsell, they never take a vacation, they never show up late, there's never a slip-and-fall, or an age, sex or race discrimination case", Puzder told Business Insider past year.

There was something for everyone with Puzder.

Puzder informed the White House of his withdrawal on Wednesday afternoon.

Joe Root replaces Alastair Cook as England's Test captain
But he has scored well at home, both in The Ashes and in Test cricket generally, averaging almost 60 with the bat in England . After Alastair Cook stepped down last week, the Selectors and I engaged in the proper process to appoint his successor.

His hearing before the Senate was set to begin tomorrow, a date that had been postponed four times because Puzder had not submitted his ethics paperwork until last week. "They're all over the news". Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., NY) said the party would present a united front against Puzder and would use "everything we can to stop" the nomination.

At least seven Republican lawmakers had signaled that they were not committed to voting for the restaurant executive.

"They're very hard-working, dedicated, creative people that really appreciate the fact that they have a job", Puzder said. "We hope we'll be able to get his hearing this week and deal with him when we get back". Puzder withdrew amid skepticism from Republican senators.

But the the skepticism among the GOP caucus kept growing.

In the hours leading up to Puzder's withdrawal, 12 Republican senators "at a minimum" were withholding support, according to one GOP senator, who asked for anonymity to avoid political retribution. Collins, Isakson, Murkowski and Scott sit on the HELP Committee while the others do not - signaling that the concerns about Puzder are widespread.

Puzder becomes the latest Trump nominee to withdraw. The nominee that was previously at the top of their list to block, DeVos, managed to squeak by in the Senate.
