Senate to vote on Scott Pruitt for EPA chief amid last-minute drama

Watch Live Stream EPA Pick Scott Pruitt's Confirmation Vote

The U.S. Senate has voted to confirm Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt as head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Most Democrats and environmental groups are fiercely opposed to Pruitt, who has often sued the EPA as Oklahoma's attorney general to block clean air and water regulations from being enforced.

Democrats and environmental groups fear for the future of the agency with Mr Pruitt at the helm, as he is well positioned to materialise President Donald Trump's campaign promises to "get rid" of the EPA "in nearly every form". Heidi Heitkamp, D-ND, and Sen. The ruling came in a case brought by the Center for Media and Democracy in January, in which the group said Pruitt failed to fulfill open records requests. And Pruitt had taken their words, and put it on his letterhead, and passed it on to the EPA as the official position of the state.

Throughout his confirmation hearing, Democrats questioned Pruitt on his history of denying that climate change is real. "I look forward to working with Administrator Pruitt in my role on the EPW Committee to ensure that we protect our environment responsibly, but in a manner that will not unnecessarily stifle job creation and our economy". Susan Collins of ME, voted against him. Sen.

Mr Pruitt will likely attempt to cut through the "regulatory rampage" that Republicans believe the EPA has embarked on over the past eight years - but he needs to be wary of over-reach. Tom Carper presented on the floor of the Senate an excerpt from a Sojourners article written by Kyle Meyaard-Schaap, the spokesperson for Young Evangelicals for Climate Action. When the emails are released, there's a good chance that information will be released that may have disqualified Pruitt.

A section of Lake Oroville is seen almost dry on August 19, 2014, when it was at just 32 per cent of its total capacity. By early Monday, numerous pumps at those gas stations had yellow tape across them, indicating they were out of gas.

He set up a "federalism unit" at the office of the Oklahoma attorney general to "combat unwarranted regulation and overreach by the federal government".

What probably isn't terribly surprising for someone who has tried to sue the EPA 14 times, is that Pruitt allegedly has deep connections with energy companies and operatives like the Koch Brothers. If a Senate vote goes in his favor today he will become the administrator for the EPA.

Democrats wanted to delay the vote until requested emails are released next week.

Environmental activists and many Democrats pushed to delay the confirmation vote until those emails are released - probably sometime next week - but Republicans had no interest in a delay, especially after Democrats deliberately slow-walked the confirmation process for many of President Donald Trump's Cabinet. "They want to have Pruitt out there over the recess so all their supporters can express themselves".
