More Rain In Store After 2 Killed In California Storms

A sign lets visitors know that this beach-side parking lot near the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach Calif. is flooded early Saturday Feb. 18 2017 following Friday's storm that brought high winds heavy rain and pounding surf to Southern California

A motorist was killed after his auto was caught in a flash flood in the town of Victorville, while another managed to clamber onto his vehicle for safety.

A large tree brought down power lines in Sherman Oaks, California, electrocuting a 55-year-old man. The line hit the man's auto, electrocuting him. They were confident the reservoir would handle any runoff from expected storms because ongoing releases have been lowering the lake's level since its spillways were damaged last week. The area is reportedly still operating under an emergency situation. Elsewhere in the city a tree brought down power lines as it fell on a vehicle, and a person was hospitalized for possible electric shock, the Fire Department said. Particularly at risk locations are those near recent burn areas, and mud- and rockslides near canyon walls, the weather agency said.

The system reached greater Los Angeles first, and is now sliding toward San Diego County, where it is expected to make landfall around 4 p.m.in the Oceanside area, says the National Weather Service.

The storm was expected to last until Saturday afternoon in Southern California.

Officials said at least two people had died in the storm.

Evacuation orders were lifted Saturday morning for about 200 hillside-area residents in Duarte as the city moved to the Yellow Alert as of 8 a.m. Sixty-three flights scheduled to arrive or depart from Los Angeles International Airport were canceled Friday, and 270 others were delayed, the airport said.

Highways were forced to close on Friday across California, causing major traffic disruptions.

About 250 Southwest Airlines flights to and from various parts of Southern California were canceled.

Almost 200000 evacuate because of dam spillway damage
A section of Lake Oroville is seen almost dry on August 19, 2014, when it was at just 32 per cent of its total capacity. By early Monday, numerous pumps at those gas stations had yellow tape across them, indicating they were out of gas.

Forecasters warned residents in the north, including San Francisco, to expect more heavy rain on Sunday.

With more rain on the horizon, crews continue to fix damage to spillways at Northern California's Oroville Dam, where an excessively wet winter has overwhelmed a massive reservoir and forced almost 200,000 people to temporarily evacuate.

"The main spillway is pumping out 100,000 cubic feet of water per second.so we still have much more water going out than coming in". Water levels have since receded slightly.

Evacuation warnings remain in place for Oroville and Thermalito as well as "all low-lying areas around the Feather River, which includes Gridley, Biggs, Yuba City, Loma Rica, and anywhere south of Butte County along the River", according to the Butte County Sheriff's Office website.

Officials said they rescued several people from the Sepulveda Basin, a flood-control area along the Los Angeles River. But California's Department of Water Resource (DWR) said the flow of water has since slowed and that the situation has stabilized. He emphasized, though, that "the integrity of the dam is not impacted" by the damaged spillway.

But residents have since returned home, and officials are feeling comfortable about the situation despite the forecast rain.
