New York Giants: Victor Cruz Visits With The Carolina Panthers
After six seasons with the New York Giants organization, wide receiver Victor Cruz was released on Monday.
If his health can hold up and he isn't the lone fix for Gettleman and the Panthers' receiving corps, Cruz could pan out to be a positive signing and may even add a little salsa to an otherwise bland mix in Carolina.
Cruz had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2011 and 2012 but struggled to regain that form since suffering a torn patellar tendon midway through the 2014 season. Cruz would provide a massive upgrade over Brown at the position, and bring some much needed veteran leadership to a position room that missed Jericho Cotchery following his departure after 2015.
Gettleman was in the Giants' front office when Cruz was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of MA in 2010. In his career, Cruz has 303 catches for 4,549 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Injuries wiped out most of the next two seasons.
Cruz appeared in 15 games this season, starting 12 of them. He caught 39 passes for 586 yards and a touchdown this past season in his return.
While it's sad for fans to see one of their favorite players go, it's an understandable move from the Giants perspective.
In addition to the Panthers, there have also been conflicting reports about potential interest from the Denver Broncos, although nothing has materialized in that regard as of yet.
The days are now over of MetLife stadium erupting in cheer whenever he made a catch: "Cruuuuuuuuz!"
While not exactly quite in the annals of history like Jimmy Graham's basketball career or Ryan Fitzpatrick's days at Harvard, the underdog tale of Victor Michael Cruz and his unlikely journey to the National Football League is one we all know and admire.
