Newport MP brands Trump a 'petulant child' during state visit debate

Trump and the Crown: Brits unsettled over US president getting royal treatment

Mr Flynn repeated comments made by former Foreign Office permanent secretary Lord Ricketts, who said the Queen has now been put in a "very hard position".

State visits by USA presidents are rare in Britain; Labour Party lawmaker Paul Flynn noted that only two - Barack Obama and George W. Bush - have made them. "And I think it is a no brainer that working closer with the United States is far more important for this country, particularly as we begin negotiations and the exit from the European Union in two, two and a half years time", Burns said.

The British government has already formally rejected the petition to downgrade or withdraw the invitation.

A SENIOR minister last night warned MPs that they threatened national security by trying to block Donald Trump's state visit.

That decision has proved polarizing. After several hours Members of Parliament, supported by overwhelming public dislike of the American billionaire and a petition boasting almost 2 million signatures, said no to Trump.

Controversy over Trump's visit intensified after he imposed a travel ban - later blocked by courts in the United States - on nationals from seven mainly Muslim countries.

"In those circumstances we shouldn't be rolling out the red carpet", Khan said. "People look at Trump with fascination".

"But I think people see him as a danger to the future of this planet, from climate change to war to racism".

Steve Robinson from Truro Momentum organised it, he said: "His attitudes towards women are absolutely appalling, we are coming towards the end of the second decade in the 21st century and we have a guy like that, the so-called leader of the free world, with attitudes like that towards woman, it is absolutely unacceptable".

Former Tory minister Sir Simon Burns, who has regularly campaigned for the Democrats in United States elections, said the invitation should be kept as post-Brexit Britain would need to keep America close.

Trump might get his parade with Queen Elizabeth and his state banquet in Buckingham Palace someday while in office.

One dead, 20 injured as train derails in Belgium
The train came off the tracks close to Brussels, and a Belgian train official confirmed that several people have been injured. Police officers and officials stand next to a train after it derailed in Kessel-Lo, Leuven, on February 18, 2017.

The government said in a statement responding to the petition that the state visit "reflects the importance of the relationship between the United States of America and the United Kingdom". But he is the first to be invited within a week of his inauguration.

Trump was invited just seven days into his presidency.

"He is definitively different", said Crispin Blunt, head of parliament's Foreign Affairs committee, who said the visit should be delayed until 2020.

The nonbinding debate was called in response to an online petition with more than 1.8 million signatures saying a formal state visit "would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen".

The British royal family has always been viewed as an asset by British prime ministers, who are prepared to call on the royals to help bolster diplomatic and economic relations.

But it has inspired much more than raised eyebrows: protests, petitions, a move to sack the Speaker of the House of Commons and a police warning the visit could require thousands of officers on the streets.

"A Queen who has been asked over the decades to host tyrants such as Presidents Mobutu [Sese Seko] of Zaire and [Nicolae] Ceausescu of Romania is going to take a brash billionaire from NY effortlessly in her stride", William Hague, a former foreign secretary, wrote in the Daily Telegraph.

And so, for the critics here, there is no higher offence than offering one to Donald Trump.

During a fierce debate on Monday, Conservative MP Nigel Evans gave a passionate speech in favor of honoring Prime Minister Theresa May's invitation to the president.

Around 20,000 people are expected to protest outside Parliament.

Other Tories accused their opposition colleagues of hypocrisy, considering that leaders with sketchy human rights records have been afforded state visits.
