Residents evacuate after levee breach in California

In the San Joaquin Valley, residents were patrolling levees for signs of danger, reviewing evacuation plans and filling sandbags.

Further north, farmers used tractors to shore up an endangered levee in California's agricultural heartland, officials opened a spillway at the Don Pedro reservoir for the first time in 20 years, and a Sierra Nevada highway threatened to collapse after the latest downpours swelled waterways, leaving almost half of the state under flood advisories.

On Monday evening, a foot patrol by two Lathrop-Manteca Fire District firefighters spotted a crack running through the top of the levee, not far from where a sinkhole had been repaired last week by OES crews after sloughing was discovered along the dry side of the levee.

A levee broke in Northern California after severe rainstorms, leading authorities to order more than 500 people to leave their homes Monday night.

For the first time in more than 10 years, water flowed into Lake Berryessa's unique spillway. The break in the levee came south of Highway 120 and west of Manteca Road, two miles west of Airport Way and Perrin road, the Sacramento Bee reported. Both Turtle Beach Resort and the Wetherbee Lake subdivision behind the old Oakwood Lake Resort are both included in the reformed boundaries.

Despite mounting a victory on Monday night, farmers in the area - that are still under an evacuation order - are bracing for the river to increase once the water that was released through the Don Pedro Spillway earlier in the day arrives and keeps the river flowing above 30 feet.

"When the water gets that high and more water is coming, there is just too much pressure and levees can break", said Tim Daly, a spokesman with the San Joaquin County Office of Emergency Services.

Residents evacuate after levee breach in California

Fears of widespread flooding resurfaced as bands of torrential rain advance on Northern California Monday.

"The central focus now is repairing from what they took from to make the patch", said Burns.

"They're telling us that it has to be an emergency for them to do anything", Coit said of the state response. "They're usually very courteous", Hathaway said of the people who call the golf course home.

However, the storm system began to weaken late Monday night and was moving away after dumping 1.86 inches of rain in San Francisco, around 2 inches in much of the Central Valley and more than 7 inches in the mountains above Big Sur, the National Weather Service reported.

After the flash flood warnings were issued, evacuation process also picked up pace on Monday.

The Don Pedro reservoir, which captures water from the Tuolumne River, a key tributary of the San Joaquin, was at 97 percent capacity. Officials will send out teams to survey the damage Monday morning.
