Thailand wins for worst traffic in world

Belfast has most congested road in UK outside London

Drivers in urban areas spent an average of 5 days in traffic previous year.

Study authors said a stable US economy, continued urbanization of big cities, employment growth and low gas prices all contributed to increased traffic and congestion worldwide in 2016, lowering the quality of life. That comes out to about $1,400 per driver.

The capital is the second most congested city in Europe after Moscow, and is the seventh most gridlocked city on the planet.

Traffic congestion in 2016 cost US drivers almost $300 billion and averaged a cost of $1,400 per driver.

Direct costs relate to the value of fuel and time wasted, and indirect costs relate to freighting and business fees from company vehicles idling in traffic, which are passed on to household bills through higher prices.

According to Inrix, Miami's monolithic wall of rush-hour cars is costing the city $3.6 billion per year - more than all but four cities in the nation. American cities dominated the list: Los Angeles earned the proud distinction of being the world's most congested city (L.A. residents spent 104 hours per person in peak-time traffic in 2016), followed by New York City at number three, San Francisco at number four, and Atlanta at number eight.

Drivers in London spent an average of 73 hours in gridlock during peak hours.

Newport MP brands Trump a 'petulant child' during state visit debate
A SENIOR minister last night warned MPs that they threatened national security by trying to block Donald Trump's state visit. Trump might get his parade with Queen Elizabeth and his state banquet in Buckingham Palace someday while in office .

Graham Cookson, chief economist at INRIX said: 'The cost of this congestion is staggering, stripping the economy of billions, impacting businesses and costing consumers dearly.

He recommends that governments use traffic data and technology to improve traffic flow as they explore new road projects and investments.

Note that this is nearly twice as much as the overall USA average of 43 hours. The cities were ranked by the time the average commuter spent in congestion at the busiest time of the day. Traffic in other global cities can be "more severe" for shorter periods, "but people in L.A. tend to sit in it longer", he says.

An economic analysis was performed to estimate the total cost to the average driver in a city, and a total cost to the city population.

Meanwhile, Inrix says the worse days for traffic past year were Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.
