Education Secretary Betsy DeVos Said Old Transgender Guidelines Were 'Overreach'

The U.S. Senate narrowly confirmed Betsy DeVos, a businesswoman and charter school advocate, February 7.

She also said that, with Mr Trump in the White House and Republicans controlling Congress, conservatives now have a "unique window of opportunity" to expand school choice programmes.

"'If public schools are not at the level (the government) thinks we should be, we should privatize them' - this is wrong", said Tyrone Howard, professor of education at UCLA.

Howard said he disagrees with DeVos' past work to provide charter and private schools with public funding. Democrats are concerned she will promote charter schools in a way that would undercut public schools, which have always been the anchor of the United States education system. "Privatizing education is a threat to democracy".

"I want to return power in education back to where it belongs, with parents, communities, and states", she said, reiterating a return to state control which she had previously suggested.

It's true that the a federal court had already barred enforcement of Obama's order, as The Times reported, but that does not mean, as DeVos asserts in her statement, that "there is no immediate impact to students by rescinding this guidance".

DeVos' controversial appointment has produced divided opinion among Texas Wesleyan University's School of Education faculty and students.

Despite the dropout figures that DeVos provided, high school graduation rates in the 2013-2014 school year rose to an "all time high of 82 percent", according to the National Center for Education Statistics. We are blind to our prejudices until we finally see them, and then we wonder how we failed to see them all along. Democrats seized on her rocky hearing hearing to paint DeVos as a horseman of the educational apocalypse.

Champions League: Aguero strikes in comeback win for City
His teams at Barcelona and Bayern Munich never just sat back and defended. "People think it is easy for Manchester City". The full-backs play like wingers and the wingers play like attacking midfielders.

"I believe that her stance could potentially affect teachers, especially first-year teachers in the education field", Reynolds wrote in an email.

Hang on for a minute.we're trying to find some more stories you might like. Elizabeth Warren of MA questioned DeVos about her experience with loans.

Many pointed to DeVos' affluent background as a billionaire heiress from one of Michigan's most powerful families.

In a separate development, Falwell is said to have become a target for Democratic senators who have now written of their concerns.

Of course, DeVos was using the aphorism to speak more broadly about her approach to government, not meals. The order must come from the Justice and Education Departments.

The new directive sets up the Trump Administration for yet another drag-out fight with the ACLU, not to mention every (typically) blue state in the nation, in a contentious and ongoing legal battle over the rights of transgender people - not to mention states' rights, since many states in the nation have already passed their own laws protecting trans students, and trans people in general.

While President Barack Obama's education secretaries - Arne Duncan and John B. King, Jr. - were fond of saying that all students should be able to succeed regardless of zip code, DeVos proffered a different version of that the idea by saying that parents should be able to "choose the best school for their child regardless of their ZIP code or family income".
