NY governor condemns U.S. anti-Semitism on Israel trip

Stephen Harper

Andrew Cuomo sought to allay concerns about anti-Semitism in the US this weekend during a whirlwind trip to Israel.

However, a December Quinnipiac poll said that, while many New Yorkers might approve of Cuomo, 54 percent don't think he'd make a good president.

Cuomo left Saturday and will return Monday. The visit also was meant to bolster economic ties between Israel and New York State.

The expedition is paid for with state funds through a 2015 initiative for trade missions to Mexico, Canada, Italy, China, and Cuba.

"This is another step to show how seriously we take this problem of anti-Semitism", Cuomo said. "New York's principles are built on a rock that will not change and the political wings will not change them", he said, alongside Israeli President Reuven Rivlin.

Cuomo's remarks came on the heels of what was originally believed to have been an act of vandalism in which headstones at a Jewish cemetery in Brooklyn were overturned.

" The second goal of this trip is 'Hineini, ' I am here, I have been here before, and I will be here again", he added.

UN Syria envoy says talks have set agenda for progress on peace
The main opposition High Negotiating Committee (HNC) said the latest Geneva talks were "more positive" than previous rounds. The terrorism point, said Jaafari, was included in the agenda "upon our request with the exception of the Riyadh group".

Rivlin praised Cuomo for his solidarity, saying that it is "an extremely important signal that the US people and government will not let antisemitism win".

Rivlin added: "The same appreciation goes to President Trump, who condemned the recent attacks".

The president noted that during the Holocaust, the U.S. was a "rare island of safety" for the Jews.

While in Israel, Cuomo met with other top leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and visited a number of historic sites like the western wall.

During his trip, Governor Cuomo also designated the first Sunday in June as Shimon Peres day in honor of the late Peres.

Governor Cuomo will host a New York State-Israel Economic Development working lunch with Nir Barkat, the Mayor of Jerusalem, key Israeli business leaders and Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Howard Zemsky.
