Four deaths blamed on west Texas wildfires

Firefighters from across the state battle wildfires Monday night and Tuesday morning near the towns of Protection and Ashland. Thousands of acres were burned by wind driven fires

The 625 square miles charred in Clark County is about 85 percent of that county's land.

Another fire, the Lefors East Fire, has burned almost 100,000 in Gray County.

Reports originally were released that 30 homes were damaged in Reno County, but the adjutant general's office later retracted those numbers. The three were identified Tuesday morning as Emmert Sloan, Cody Crockett and Sydney Wallace. The bodies of all three were found close to one another.

Dramatic dashcam video shows a Kansas trooper rescuing a stranded tractor-trailer driver from a wildfire and driving through thick smoke as flames lick the roadside. The fire moved rapidly and threatened the towns of Higgins and Glazier. After the fire jumped Interstate 70 east of him on Monday, he began turning people around before they drove into it.

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says in a statement that about 4,200 large round bales of hay are needed to feed displaced animals over the next two weeks.

"There were multiple wildfires across Oklahoma and Kansas primarily due to the low humidity and high winds", Emergency Management Director Greg Standard said.

And a wildfire in Kansas is prompting evacuations.

"These conditions will make it somewhat easier for firefighting efforts, but far from flawless".

The Dumas Complex Fire, in Potter County near the city of Amarillo, ignited and spread rapidly with the winds gusting in excess of 50 miles per hour.

"Really a lot of this most wildfire are human cause, whether equipment and power lines". Four firefighters were injured while battling the blaze.

The survivors remember the suddenness of what came upon them: wind, flying sand, the sky glowing suddenly red.

The Texas A&M Forest Service says there have been homes burned in Ochiltree County. By Wednesday, 1,000 to 2,000 residents of the county remained displaced.

A wildfire a year ago that burned land in Comanche County and neighboring Barber County held the previous state record. No injuries were reported.

Monitoring is crucial because the ground is "extremely dry", and it was possible that sparks from a smoldering stump could re-ignite the fire, said John Lehman, the emergency manager in Comanche County, where 234 square miles has burned.

Winds across the Panhandle should subside for Wednesday, but elevated fire conditions return to the area Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

He told CNN that 125,000 acres were burning in his county alone. Among them, estimates of the burned land range from a single square mile to about 90. The Kansas National Guard has lent four Black Hawk helicopters to the firefighting effort for water drops.

Evacuation orders were issued for the communities of Laverne, Buffalo and Fort Supply in Woodward and Payne Counties.

Wildfires burning in west Texas have claimed the lives of at four people. Wind gusts of more than 60 miles per hour expanded the fire.

Wildfires have claimed the lives of as many as seven people across multiple states in the central USA, consuming as many as one million acres.

Three people died Monday while working on a ranch in Texas.
