The death toll in the landslide at a major rubbish dump on the outskirts of Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa has risen to 48.

"In the long run, we will conduct a resettling program to relocate people who live in and around the landfill", said Addis Ababa Mayor Diriba Kuma.

The Koshe site has been one of the main garbage dumps for Addis Ababa for more than 40 years.

Hundreds of people attempt to make a living here by scavenging at the landfill site, sifting through the rubbish for items they can sell. Elderly women cried, and others stood anxiously waiting for news of loved ones. The accident has also injured 22 people and two of them who are severely damaged are being treated at ALERT (African Leprosy Rehabilitation and Training Center) Hospital, Government Communications Affairs said in its statement this morning.

Another resident, Tebeju Asres said that the family's house had been swallowed by the landslide.

Is winter going to make a return this weekend?
Total snowfall for the season to date in Newark, as of February 28, was 20.6 inches, or 2.4 inches below normal. Saturday afternoon - A rain and snow mix will develop, becoming more snow as temperatures dip below freezing.

The Post cited a local official as saying dumping at the site had stopped for several years, but had recently resumed, likely triggering the landslide.

It plans to burn rubbish generated by the capital's estimated four million people and convert it into electricity.

A number of makeshift homes surrounding the landfill are said to have been completely buried by waste. The landfill has been used for more than 50 years, with other, smaller landslides reported in recent years.

Officials said about 150 people were present at the large landfill when the slide happened.
