Google expands safeguards for advertisers

Ministers have summoned Google for talks at the Cabinet Office after imposing a temporary restriction on its own ads - including for military recruitment and blood donation campaigns - appearing on YouTube.

Google's attempt to stem the flow of anxious firms and agencies away from its platforms comes as a number of Irish advertisers look to join a British boycott that kicked off following a damning report of Google's policies in the Times of London. This is due to instances of advertising appearing alongside potentially harmful content, such as videos from supporters of extremist groups and tutorials on how to tie a noose. Due to the problem with Google's ad placing policy, numerous well-known brands have pulled their ads.

In the same week, the Guardian also pulled all its advertising from both Google and YouTube after it said a promotion for a membership scheme had been inadvertently placed next to extremist material.

Martin Sorrell, the founder and CEO of WPP, the global advertising firm, said in a statement that Google and Facebook have "the same responsibilities as any media company" and could not "masquerade" as mere technology platforms.

The UK is Google's largest market outside the USA, generating $7.8 billion mainly from advertising in 2016, or almost 9% of the U.S. giant's global revenue.

Google's shift in policies, according to Bloomberg, represents a sharp turn for the search engine giant.

Second, the company is promising better controls for advertisers to choose where their money goes, and to prevent accidentally spending it on hateful content. Google also put up a blog post on the controversy.

Ivanka Trump Gets White House Office, Access to Classified Information
According to Politico , her role will be to serve as her father's " eyes and ears " and to provide advice, her attorney said. She had sat at the Oval Office desk and controversially posed for a picture with her father and Trudeau by her side.

Google apologized on Monday for the incidents and made a commitment to simplify advertiser controls, add safer defaults and increase investments to enforce its ad policies faster.

British supermarket chain J Sainsbury, whose ads appeared on videos posted by the white nationalist Polish Defence League, said it and its sister brand Argos would immediately suspend all Google advertising.

As Marketing Land has reported, the Google Display Network includes many extremist sites propagating right- and left-wing ideologies, hoaxes and misinformation.

First, Schindler said that YouTube would be "taking a tougher stance on hateful, offensive, and derogatory content" - and this extends to what content is allowed on the platform, "not just what content can be monetized", he wrote.

The company has tried propagating free speech across the interwebs but it has time and again been accused of spreading hate online.

There are two hard issues for Google here: spotting videos that are illegal and should be removed from YouTube; and determining which are legal but not suitable to carry advertising. But at times we don't get it right.
