Syrian rebels launch second Damascus attack in three days

Heavy clashes rocked eastern districts of Damscus as rebels and jihadists tried to fight their way into the city centre in a surprise assault on government forces

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, said pro-government fighters and 21 rebels and jihadists were killed in the fighting.

Airstrikes and artillery fire shook Damascus on Tuesday as government forces tried to repel a second rebel attack on the Syrian capital in three days.

The SOHR said at least 143 air raids were conducted by the Syrian army on rebel held eastern parts of Damascus, mostly targeting Jobar, since the rebels launched their offensive. Rebels had attacked in Jobar to relieve military pressure after their loss of ground in nearby Qaboun and Barza, a commander from the Failaq al-Rahman group which is fighting there said on Sunday.

Since then, the regime has been trying to break down rebel resistance in Damascus and reassert full control of the capital after six years of fighting.

The Syrian army was quick to confront the new offensive, particularly that troops and reinforcements are still in that position after succeeding to foil the first wave of attack by the rebels on Sunday, according to a military source.

Damascus only has a few opposition-held areas, and Jobar is the closest to the city centre.

The government dispatched some of its elite forces to halt the offensive, which began shortly before sunrise with two suicide bombers from an al-Qaida-linked group. He did not have an immediate toll for Monday morning's air strikes.

"Several anti-aircraft missiles were launched from Syria following the mission and IDF aerial defense systems intercepted one of the missiles", the army said in a statement.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the air strikes targeted weapons bound for Lebanon's Shiite militant group Hezbollah, and that Israel would do the same again if necessary. In December, the regime retook Aleppo, Syria's largest city before the war started in 2011.

Assad was quoted in comments translated into Russian that "any military operation in Syria that does not have the consent of the Syrian government is illegal".

Almost half a million people have been killed and half of the country's pre-war population has been displaced.

The military says it managed to push the rebels back.
