EPA Chief: Paris Climate Accord 'Just A Bad Deal'

Former President Barack Obama shakes hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping after a joint press conference on Nov. 12 2014 in Beijing a day after the countries joint announcement on climate change

Pruitt said on ABC's "This Week" that the executive order will undo former President Barack Obama's 2015 Clean Power Plan, which was blocked by the Supreme Court a year ago. "So our actions, starting on Tuesday, shortly after the executive order, will make sure that whatever steps we take in the future will be pro-growth, pro-environment, but within the framework of the Clean Air Act, and it will be legal". It was only a matter of time before President Donald Trump came for the Clean Power Plan. "Paris was just a bad deal".

Pruitt said that the Paris Agreement to combat climate change, which the U.S. signed up to, was "non-binding". The EPA still must hold public hearings, accept public comments, consult with stakeholders, and likely face numerous lawsuits in its effort to eliminate the Clean Power Plan altogether.

The plan is being challenged in the US Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

The Obama administration's Clean Power Plan was first introduced in 2015 to help cut carbon pollution from fossil fuel-fired power plants.

Trump is making good on campaign promises to sign orders that will be beneficial to the coal industry. The order would dissolve the task force that calculated what has become known as "the social cost of carbon" and revert to the 2003 standard used under the George W. Bush administration.

New discoveries of cheaper natural gas, extracted via hydrofracking, have made coal-especially that mined by humans-economically uncompetitive, even for the many users who don't care that natural gas produces energy with a much lower carbon burden per kilowatt-hour than does coal. His Environmental Protection Agency is aiming to aggressively roll back Obama-era environmental regulations.

Supporters of the Obama-era plan say it would spur thousands of clean-energy jobs.

- Instructions to EPA to rewrite regulations restricting carbon emissions from both new and existing power plants.

The document lays out a broad blueprint for the Trump administration to dismantle the architecture that former President Barack Obama built to combat the phenomenon, according to details shared with Bloomberg News.

On Tuesday, President Trump will announce new executive orders that target EPA regulations that hindered electricity production in the United States.
