Thousands of Yemenis rally in Sanaa on war's second anniversary

UN rejects call to place Yemeni port under its supervision

Under the banner, "Two Year of Steadfastness" (#عامان_من_الصمود), militants and activists chanted their support for the Houthis, whom the Saudi-led coalition has so far been unable to defeat.

In June, former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon admitted to bowing to Saudi pressure over a report that blasted Saudi Arabia for child casualties in Yemen. The United Nations says thousands of people have died.

The two sides also have discussed potential USA support for retaking the Yemeni port at Hodeidah.

The decision by a court in the capital Sanaa, reported by the state news agency Saba, which is run by the Houthis, may render more remote the resumption of stalled peace talks to end the conflict which has killed at least 10,000 people.

Andrew Smith, a spokesperson for Campaign Against Arms Trade, said: "For two years now, Saudi forces have unleashed a brutal humanitarian catastrophe on the people of Yemen. Seven million Yemenis are facing starvation".

According to the UK Department for International Development and ForeignAssistance.gov, which is managed by the US State Department's Office of US Foreign Assistance Resources, the UK and US governments together have provided or planned to spend an estimated US$450 million in aid to support Yemen since March 2015. Evidence of direct Iranian support for the Houthis was hard to discern early in the conflict, making many experts suspicious of the case that they were just Iranian puppets. The same year, the Houthis came to the negotiating table to help draft a power-sharing agreement with other Yemeni factions through a UN-sponsored National Dialogue Conference.

Judge Pirro: "Paul Ryan Needs to Step Down"
Ryan said after news broke that Americans would be "living with Obamacare for the foreseeable future". In a press conference on Friday, a defeated Ryan told reporters that the bill would be pulled.

They expressed fear that Houthis will turn these areas into targets for coalition forces, which usually strikes military bases and arms warehouses.

Approval of the request would mark a significant policy shift.

Yemen's main port at Hodeida is badly damaged and has been short of cranes. Indeed, the Emirati army is in large measure a mercenary force, having recruited former members of the Colombian, Salvadoran and Chilean military to do the ruling royal family's dirty work.

One of the officials said the United States was examining offering the United Arab Emirates, for example, US intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets and information sharing.

Yemen today remains the most prominent example of an escalation of ideological battles between Tehran and Riyadh, as both countries fight on similar lines in Iraq and Syria as well, with the House of Saud's backing of Sunni militias fighting against the Assad regime to Iran's deployment of its specialized forces, such as the shadowy Quds Force and its deployment of Hezbollah.

Other reports also suggest that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has recently asked the White House to lift Obama-era restrictions on USA military support for Persian Gulf states engaged in the Yemeni war. "The Trump Administration [could start] their own proxy war with Iran by bombing the Houthis", she says, "and that's the real danger now".
