Launch, Land, Launch - SpaceX Tries Reusing Its Rocket

A SpaceX rocket originally flew in April 2016 before landing successfully on an unmanned drone ship bobbing in the Atlantic Ocean. The Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to fly again on Wednesday

The launch from the Kennedy Space Center in the U.S. state of Florida will be the first with a reused Falcon 9 booster stage that was recovered from a previous flight, media reported.

The Thursday launch could also mark a huge moment for the private space sector as a whole. After flying more than 4,000 miles per hour and descending from about 460,000 feet, the first stage of the Falcon 9 used small thrusters to align itself for landing and then fired its main engines to slow as it reentered the atmosphere, landing on the autonomous drone ship Of Course I Still Love You in the Atlantic Ocean. After successfully showcasing their skill in landing rockets on solid ground, they moved to landing the spacecraft to floating drone ships at sea.

"We're here at the edge of quite a significant bit of history", said Martin Halliwell, chief technology officer with satellite operator SES. Assuming the rocket doesn't become a museum piece after that, maybe we'll see it fly again. "This is a hugely important milestone".

Billionaire CEO Elon Musk in the past has said reusability is the key to developing a way to reaching Mars and called it the "fundamental breakthrough" needed in that effort.

SpaceX will send a used Falcon 9 rocket into space carrying a telecommunications satellite from the Space Coast.

Elon musk said earlier that the cost of space-faring will be reduced by a factor of a hundred, and if SpaceX manages to relaunch its rocket, the humanity may enter a new golden age of space exploration. The actions were most unusual, as almost all rocket parts fall into the ocean after launching, they sink and are never recovered or seen again. "That vehicle needs to be created to be reflown right away". (In October, however, she told Space News that SpaceX is only offering 10 percent discounts for the time being.) That means the Falcon 9, which starts at a little more than $60 million, could eventually go for $40 million if it's a reused vehicle. SES S.A a Luxembourg-based communications satellite is the owner and they are taking the risk of being the first company to take a chance on SpaceX's booster. The rocket will carry a satellite called SES-10, which is created to provide television coverage for some parts of Central and South America. The company has contracted with SpaceX for four additional missions, according to Halliwell. "This booster is a really good booster and we are confident". This is highly unusual, as generally most of the rocket parts crash into the ocean, forever sinking at the bottom. Musk has brought in executives from other industries to promote innovation. Because it takes so much energy to get out of the pull of Earth's gravity, rockets are designed in stages with a first stage that carries most of the fuel doing the work of getting the blaster as far as low Earth orbit. The core of the Falcon 9 first flew on April 8, 2016, with a Dragon supply ship on a cargo mission to the International Space Station, then landed with the assistance of rocket thrust on a mobile platform in the Atlantic Ocean. Rockets cost tens of millions of dollars, and in the past they've typically just been left to burn up in the atmosphere after launch.
