Federation Internationale de Football Association plans 6-team 2026 World Cup playoff

The Bureau of FIFA Council has recommended that nine slots should be allocated top Africa in the expanded 2026 World Cup.

The post All regions get more slots in 2026 World Cup - FIFA plan appeared first on Vanguard News.

The proposed plan also gives additional slots to North and Central America, South America, Africa and Asia.

The proposed playoff will feature one team from each confederation and a nation from the confederation that has the host country. The seeded teams will play the winners of knock-out matches between the four unseeded teams to determine who will reach the World Cup.

The FIFA council, chaired by president Gianni Infantino, must approve the proposal at a meeting in Bahrain in May.

The final two spots in the World Cup will be decided by the six-team tournament. The 2026 World Cup will feature 12 more teams than ever before following Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino's push to increase revenues and prominence of the event.

Thousands of Yemenis rally in Sanaa on war's second anniversary
The two sides also have discussed potential USA support for retaking the Yemeni port at Hodeidah. Yemen's main port at Hodeida is badly damaged and has been short of cranes.

The FIFA President Gianni Infantino and presidents of each of the six confederations agreed at a meeting in Zurich on Thursday, the world football governing body said in a statement.

The FIFA Council unanimously decided on expanding the world cup to a 48-team competition at the start of the year and Oceania now stands to benefit.

Excluding Europe, the other five confederations would send one team to the newly suggested playoff, with the host continent providing the sixth side.

With the United States, Mexico and Canada considering a co-hosting bid for 2026, the decision on which will get direct entry is set to be made by the council and not individual confederations.

That would be an increase from the tally of five places that the continent now holds.

New Zealand Football says proposed changes to World Cup qualifications could be a game changer. The tender was launched on 21 October 2016 and included the media rights to all 2017-2018 FIFA events**, including the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup™.
