Govt’s India Rankings 2017 IISc Bangalore best institute Miranda House top college

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore is the best university in India, according to government rankings of educational institutions released today. This was the second time that the rankings were released after India Rankings - 2016, which were released in April 2016. Four lists were released past year - Universities, Engineering, Management and Pharmacy Institutions.

Jadavpur University has been ranked at the fifth position, while Hyderabad University, which was at the fourth position previous year, got the seventh rank this time.

During the announcement of rankings on Monday, HRD Minister also mentioned that the government will give more funding to ranked institutions. NIRF was approved by the MHRD and launched on 2015. Also, this year every large institution will be given a common overall rank as well as a discipline specific rank as applicable. Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) showed up on the 49th rank while Bharati Vidyapeeth University in Mumbai and Symbiosis International University from Pune were relegated to the 90th and the 97th in the overall chart.

Javadekar hailed both JNU and JU for their contribution to research work and said the rankings were aimed at creating a competition for the educational institutes to strive for excellence.

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has been ranked as the top engineering institute; deemed university Jamia Hamdard in Delhi is best in pharmacy category while Miranda House in the national capital has been ranked the best college in the country. Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad was adjudged the finest management institute. "It is very encouraging and rewarding to the staff and students of the institute", said Devang Khakkar, director of IIT-B.

The parameters broadly cover Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.The project has over 800 new participants and will be introduced under some new categories added from this year.
