Leftist Moreno wins Ecuador presidential election

Ecuador's officialist candidate Lenin Moreno celebrates during the last hours before the results of the presidential election with Ecuador's Vice President Jorge Glas in Quito Ecuador. EFE

Moreno pocketed 51.16 percent of valid votes versus 48.84 percent for conservative challenger Guillermo Lasso, with 99.65 percent of votes counted, according to the council.

Ahead of Lasso's announcement of the specific details of his challenge to the results Wednesday, head of the National Electoral Council, Juan Pablo Pozo, noted that only 835 electoral rolls - or 2 percent of the more than 40,000 rolls - presented irregularities and would be submitted to a public audit.

Hundreds of Lasso supporters gathered outside the National Electoral Council's headquarters in Quito for the third straight night of mostly peaceful protests that contrasted with the more unruly behaviour seen on election night, when supporters crashed through metal barricades in Quito and scuffled with riot police in several cities.

"We have a mountain of documents", Lasso told reporters on Wednesday, as quoted by the TeleSUR broadcaster, referring to evidence of alleged election fraud.

The 45-year-old Australian buoyantly turned that threat around on Lasso as official results showed the conservative ex-banker on track to lose.

The Organization of American States said its mission of electoral observers that visited at random 480 voting centres nationwide found no discrepancies between the tallies and the official results and encouraged Lasso to issue complaints through institutional channels.

Correa accused Lasso supporters of trying to deny the results and provoke violence. "The United States congratulates the people of Ecuador on taking part in the second-round Presidential elections on April 2".

For weeks Ecuadoreans polarized by 10 years of Correa's iron-fisted rule had been bracing for a contested vote. Moreno, 64, also benefited from last-minute doubts that the pro-business Lasso if elected would gut social programs that have endeared poor voters to Correa's "Citizens' Revolution".

Conservative candidate Guillermo Lasso has claimed his campaign for the presidency of Ecuador found irregularities at almost 2,000 polling station tables where his opponent won in Sunday's election. Moreno said he would let him stay.

Assange later apologized but blamed Lasso for starting the feud. As it became clear that Mr Moreno would win, Mr Assange tweeted: "I cordially invite Lasso to leave Ecuador within 30 days (with or without his tax haven millions)", in reference to...
