UN strongly condemns North Korea's latest missile launch

US military confirms N. Korea fired missile into Sea of Japan AFP by AFP4 Apr 20170 4 Apr 2017 4 Apr 2017

The Pentagon can defend against any North Korean missile threat, but Pyongyang's rapidly evolving weapons programme is shrinking the warning time ahead of a launch, a top USA general said on Thursday (Apr 6).

Though the White House has previously made similar statements, the call came hours before Trump hosts Chinese President Xi Jinping for a two-day summit at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

The South Korean military said the missile was sacked from land near the east coast city of Sinpo and flew only about 60 kilometers (40 miles).

The European Union today imposed additional sanctions on North Korea over nuclear and ballistic missile tests which it said threatened global security.

She was referring to North Korea's young leader, Kim Jong Un.

North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes will be high on the agenda when Trump and Xi meet at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida later on Thursday, with anger in Beijing simmering over the deployment of an advanced US anti-missile system in South Korea.

The U.S. Pacific Command said in a statement around the same time that initial assessments showed the missile was a mid-ranged KN-15.

North Korea launched a projectile on Wednesday, which US officials said appeared to be a liquid-fueled, extended-range Scud missile that only traveled a fraction of its range before spinning out of control and crashing into the sea.

A senior intelligence official told the network that he doubted us and China could find a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

"I'm sure we're going to have a fantastic meeting and we're going to talk about a lot of things, including, of course, North Korea, a problem, and that's really a humanity problem", Trump said. Most of North Korea's missiles use liquid propellant, which usually must be added on the launch pad before the weapon is fired.

North Korea's state media have said the world will soon witness what they called "eventful successes" in the country's space development.

"This coordinated initiative could force North Korea to make real demilitarization concessions, while providing a win for both China and the United States", Markey wrote, adding that China has unsuccessfully urged the USA to engage North Korea directly for years.

North Korea often responds to the drills with its own military training and harsh rhetoric. March 6, 2017: North Korea fires four ballistic missiles, three of them falling into Japan's exclusive economic zone.

In order to cope with the rising nuclear threat, Washington authorized a deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system in South Korea, which it began to deploy last month.
