Pearl Jam, Tupac, Yes, Journey to be inducted into Rock Hall

Not Released

The event will honor the late rap star Tupac Shakur, along with Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, Pearl Jam, and Yes.

The induction ceremony is set for Friday in New York City, and promises its fair share of drama on and off the stage.

Pearl Jam closed out the night with a searing all-star jam of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World". Grunge heroes Pearl Jam and rapper Tupac Shakur will each be inducted in their first year of eligibility, 25 years after the release of their debut albums in 1991.

Vedder issued a call to arms on climate change - saying that rising temperatures were not, in the phrasing of industry-friendly US President Donald Trump, "fake news".

"That's right - Tupac got Snoop Dogg smoking blunts", he said to laughs from the audience. Snoop Dogg and YG performed "Gangsta Party", Treach from Naughty by Nature did "Hail Mary", and T.I. - decked out in Tupac's signature bowtie bandanna AND a leather corset - gave an affecting cover of "Keep Ya Head Up" that was clearly very meaningful for him. Shakur died in 1996.

Alicia Keys performed a medley of Shakur's songs on piano, including "Dear Mama" and "Changes".

Letterman's speech was arguably the highlight of the night, one filled with revelations about how much he has missed hearing live music nightly since retiring, and that time he drove Vedder insane by repeatedly singing the chorus to "Black". "You put us here", he said. "But from my heart I must tell you - I've been gone a long time, but you've always been in my heart".

While many awards shows have featured Prince tributes since the singer's death one year ago this month, not every performance did justice to the pop icon.

Mr. Browne said folk music gave voice to immigrants and those who were brought to America as slaves.

"Due to illness, Neil Young is regrettably no longer able to induct Pearl Jam at this Year's Induction Ceremony", said the Rock Hall in a statement Wednesday.

"My granddaughter had no clue who I was until I took her backstage to a Taylor Swift concert", said Baez, who added that her granddaughter took a selfie with Swift and now had "newfound respect for her grandmother".

TMZ also reports that RUSH's GEDDY LEE, who will induct YES, along with bandmate ALEX LIFESON, will play bass - stepping in the shoes of the late CHRIS SQUIRE - for the band at the show.

ELO, which kicked off the show with Berry's Roll Over Beethoven. and progressive British rockers Yes were also inducted Friday. He did, however, point out it was "bittersweet" to take over for late Yes bassist Chris Squire, who passed away in 2015 and didn't live to see his band recognized.
