Tillerson Says Destroying ISIS Still 'First Priority' In Syria

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said he sees no reason for retaliation from Russian Federation for USA missile strikes on a Syrian air base.

President Donald Trump's military attack on the Assad regime was, in itself, a stark reversal from his earlier position to work with Russia, Syria's key ally, to negotiate a solution to the country's civil war.

The destruction of ISIS is still the primary goal of USA policy in Syria, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Sunday.

Bashar Assad also thanked the Iranian leadership and the people for their continued support of the Syrian people in the face of the terrorist war which is backed by many Western and regional states.

"Regime change is something that we think is going to happen because all of the parties are going to see that Assad is not the leader that needs to be taking place for Syria".

"I think the real failure here has been Russia's failure to live up to its commitments under the chemical weapons agreements that were entered into in 2013", Tillerson said on ABC's "This Week".

But United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said there can be no peace in Syria with Assad in power. At the same time, Tillerson said Assad's fate would be decided by the Syrian people.

But in the aftermath of the attack, Trump ordered the strike targeting the Shayrat air base in central Syria's Homs province with 59 Tomahawk missiles.

Liverpool should be more like Chelsea - Klopp
Liverpool striker Divock Origi admits that he expected the race for a top-four spot in the Premier League to be tight this season. It was too central to Boruc, though, and the Bournemouth keeper made a fairly comfortable save.

But after the Syrian president used chemical sarin gas during a fight with rebels on Tuesday, Haley has taken a stronger line against Assad.

Sadr became the first Iraqi political leader to call on Assad to resign even as he condemned the United States for the missile strikes on a Syrian airfield on Friday (7 April). He said he will remind his counterpart of Russia's obligation to act as the guarantor of the agreement to eliminate chemical weapons from Syria.

Moscow has said it doesn't believe Assad's forces carried out the attack on Thursday that involved children and called for a "thorough and impartial" investigation.

Tillerson is expected in Moscow this week for talks with Russian officials.

"We've seen what that looks like when you undertake a violent regime change in Libya and the situation in Libya continues to be very chaotic and I would argue that the life of the Libyan people is not all that well off today", Tillerson said.

The move immediately prompted a backlash from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said it would damage U.S.

New strikes hit outside the town on Sunday, with no immediate reports of casualties, the monitor added.
