Iran's Rouhani registers to run for re-election

He is considered a close ally of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who past year appointed him to run the powerful charity-cum-business-empire Astan Qods Razavi (AQR), which oversees the Imam Reza shrine in the holy city of Mashhad.

Rouhani portrayed the deal as a newborn baby and hinted that his hard-line opponents were not fit to protect it, "Those who several times attempted to kill the child can not be a good caretaker for the child".

Several former ministers and hardliner former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are among those who have registered, Reuters reports.

Rouhani, a moderate cleric, also said that if he is elected to a second term, he will continue a practice of being transparent with the Iranian people. Under Iran's Constitution, a president can not serve for three terms in a row.

Associated Press journalists watched Wednesday, April 12, as stunned election officials processed the former hard-line president's paperwork.

Though Rouhani has yet to formally register, many viewed him as a shoe-in following Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's recommendation in September for Ahmadinejad to stand down.

Brexit Talks to Prove Difficult, 'Confrontational' - EU Council Chief
Tusk also said the European Union would honour all its commitments, and stressed that Britain would have to as well. The EU guidelines make clear there can be no talks on the shape of any future relationship at this stage.

Rouhani, who won the 2013 presidential elections in the first round with 50.8 per cent of the vote, is the candidate of the reformist bloc, although he defines himself as moderate.

Ahmadinejad previously served two four-year terms from 2005 to 2013.

Rouhani has arrived at the Interior Ministry where candidates enroll, Trend correspondent reported April 14.

The five-day registration period for the May 19 election began on Tuesday and will be followed by a process of vetting of the hopefuls by a hardline watchdog body, the Guardian Council.

Most of the analysts believe that Rouhani, Raisi and Ahmadinejad will be the three major candidates with political weight and ideological reflection, whose competition can heat up the furnace of election in Iran next month.

He sought to reach across political lines on Friday, saying: "I will be the candidate for the whole of Iran".
