Protesters Arrested Over White Nationalist Richard Spencer's Speech at Auburn University

Richard Spencer

"I think we were certainly successful in doing that", Capt. Lorenza Dorsey with the Auburn Police Division said on Wednesday. When he said that it was "truly sick" that Auburn would bring in people who were "not the greatest exemplars of the African race", who would sexually abuse the white women on campus, someone in the crowd screamed back that "white men rape, too".

But in the end the university was forced to host Spencer in Foy Hall Tuesday evening after all when a federal judge in Montgomery issued an order Tuesday afternoon barring it from keeping him from speaking.

Kimberly Costen, Auburn freshman, right, yells at supports for Richard Spencer right to speak at Auburn University on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, in Auburn, Ala.

Spencer, a leader of the so-called alt-right movement, had originally been scheduled to speak at Foy Hall on campus.

Before a crowd that alternated between cheers and jeers, Spencer spun a narrative: white identity has been ripped away from people, and people are no longer comfortable celebrating "European" heritage and its place in history.

Circuit Court of Appeals Grants Motion to Vacate Stays of Execution
Ward's attorneys have argued he is a diagnosed schizophrenic with no rational understanding of his impending execution. But that isn't the only legal roadblock that the state faces as it looks to execute its first inmate since 2005.

Spencer says he plans to speak at Auburn on Tuesday evening regardless of the school's decision.

A booking mug of one of the suspects shows him bloody and bandaged because of a physical altercation between dueling demonstrators before the Tuesday night speech, the website reported. For the sake of openness, I must admit that I am a proud alumnus of Auburn University and was one of the founders of its black-alumni association.

Auburn officials cited public safety concerns in trying to stop Spencer from appearing in the student union building.

The university condemned "attempts by uninvited, unaffiliated, off-campus groups and individuals to provoke conflict that is racially divisive and disruptive to our campus environment", according to a statement by Provost Timothy Boosinger. Dickson filed the suit on behalf of Cameron Padgett, identified as an Atlanta-area resident who rented an auditorium for Spencer's talk.

"I'm not going to allow that to happen", Spencer told the Plainsman, Auburn's student newspaper, after the cancellation announcement.
