ESCALATION IN SYRIA: Erdogan I - The Phantom Menace of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

There were no reports of casualties on the Turkish side

US troops are now patrolling the Turkish-Syrian border, the Military Times reported Friday.

Turkey's leader on Saturday urged the United States to stop supporting Syrian Kurdish militants as local media reported the Turkish military has moved armored vehicles and personnel carriers to a base near the Syrian border.

The Syrian Kurdish Peoples' Protection Units (YPG) are seen by Washington as the most effective fighting force in the battle against jihadists in Syria.

US officials say the troop movement is part of its operations with the Kurdish forces in northern Syria.

The agency said the relocation comes after Turkish officials announced the completion of a phase of Turkey's cross-border operation of Euphrates Shield in Syria, adding that the force may be used against Syrian Kurdish militants "if needed".

Turkey on Wednesday carried out several strikes in Syria and Iraq against separatist Kurdish rebels and their allies, drawing the wrath of USA officials who accused Ankara of lacklustre coordination.

A commander of the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia said on Friday U.S. forces would begin monitoring the situation along the Syria-Turkey frontier after cross-border fire between the Turkish military and YPG this week.

The Turkish airstrike also wounded 18 members of the US-backed People's Protection Unites (YPG), according to Zerohedge.

"Better they [YPG] live in fear than we have worries", the Turkish President said.

American troops have been patrolling with their Kurdish allies near the Syrian-Turkish border as tensions flare over American support for Kurds fighting ISIS. "You can not play with this nation", Mr Erdogan said.

The Turkish government is pressuring Washington to stop backing Kurdish fighters as an ally in the fight against ISIL militants in Syria, in a dispute that has limited cooperation between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have claimed an important victory over the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) by taking control of the old quarters of the strategically important northern Syrian town of Tabqa, reports Reuters.

The attacks on the YPG, a key member of a US-backed militia fighting Islamic State in Syria, have further complicated relations with Washington.

On Wednesday, Turkish airstrikes attacked both YPG and PKK positions in Syria and Iraq. Ankara denies deliberately targeting them and offered condolences to Kurdish Regional Government President Masoud Barzani for the deaths of the Peshmerga forces, but offered no apologies for the deaths of the YPG.

"We are seriously concerned to see USA flags in a convoy that has YPG rags on it", Erdogan told reporters at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport before leaving for a two-day visit to India.

"We hope that this military mobilisation is not meant to provoke our forces or for another objective linked to entering Syrian territories".

Turkey, he added, is unlikely to launch a long-term incursion into Syria for fear of getting bogged down in a quagmire, but skirmishes along the border could continue. Perhaps he thought this would help in the effort to get his counterpart on the same page regarding things like, for example, not attacking people whom a Pentagon spokesperson called "our partner forces in the fight against ISIS".
