North Korea: US and South Korea tried to assassinate Kim Jong Un

The North's leader is surrounded by tight security at all times, and Pyongyang maintains a enormous surveillance system over its own population that is ingrained at every level of society, where open dissent is unknown.

Seoul has condemned North Korea for conducting its latest military exercise, which involved simulating a commando raid on South Korea's presidential palace.

North Korea accused the usa and South Korea of a launching an unsuccessful assassination attempt against North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un involving biochemical weapons, ABC News reported Friday morning.

The North's Ministry of State Security released a statement saying "the last-ditch effort" of U.S. "imperialists" and the South had gone "beyond the limits".

No details about how the supposed plot was uncovered were given in the statement.

In an extraordinary 1,800-word report Friday, which offered no evidence other than account laced with fantastical language, North Korean state news agency KCNA said a "hideous terrorist group" conspired with the CIA and South Korea's Intelligence Service (IS) to mount the attack.

South Korea has accused Pyongyang of assassination plots, too, most recently in February following the murder of Kim Jong Nam, allegedly at the hands of North Korean agents.

The Ministry of State Security claimed a terrorist group backed by the CIA and South Korea's intelligence agency had entered the country.

The CIA told its agent Kim it had access to radioactive and "nano poisonous" substances whose lethal results would appear only after six to 12 months, the statement said.

It said Kim received two payments of $20,000 and a "satellite transmitter-receiver".

North Korea conducted an annual military parade, featuring a display of missiles and overseen by top leader Kim Jong Un and his right-hand men, on April 15. "Those acts have been put into the extremely serious phase of implementation after crossing the threshold of the DPRK".

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson at a trilateral meeting with with Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se at the United Nations in New York City, US, April 28, 2017.

The US has sent a warship to the region and installed a controversial anti-missile defence system in South Korea.

"Korean-style anti-terrorist attack will be commenced from this moment to sweep away the intelligence and plot-breeding organizations of the United States imperialists and the puppet clique [South Korea]", a North Korean government station published in KCNA.

"The Key Resolve and Foal Eagle 17 joint military drills revealed that the new Trump administration, too is resorting to the hostile policy toward North Korea by use of force, tougher sanctions and pressure", it said.

The accusation alleged that the USA and South Korea had plotted to murder "supreme leader" Kim Jong Un and others among the North Korean leadership with a bio-chemical weapon.

The KCNA report claimed the plot was "recently uncovered and smashed", and accused members of the Central Intelligence Agency and IS of working with a North Korean citizen to provide money and weapons to carry out "state-sponsored terrorism". Although a total oil embargo is unlikely, analysts see some kind of curtailment of Chinese exports to North Korea as probable.

With President Trump promising to stop North Korea developing nuclear weapons, these are also tense times, when Pyongyang could have been tempted to hit back at the US.

After 13 North Korean workers from a restaurant in China defected to South Korea in April a year ago, North Korea said they were kidnapped by South Korean spies.
