Jordanian stabs Israeli officer in Jerusalem, shot dead

U.S. President Donald Trump arrives aboard Air Force One at JFK International Airport in New York

"Before he was overpowered, the assailant stabbed (with a knife) a police officer who was hospitalized in a state of moderate severity", - stated in the message.

A man who allegedly stabbed on Saturday an Israeli policeman outside Chain's Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem and was shot dead at the scene was later identified as a 57-year-old Jordanian citizen. Closed circuit footage released by police shows a bald man in a jacket lunging at the uniformed officer and swiping a knife at him before pinning him to the ground.

The attacker, brandishing a knife, stabbed the policeman in one of the alleys of the Old City before the wounded officer shot him dead, the statement said.

Making no mention of the stabbing, Jordanian Minister for Media Affairs Mohammed Momani issued a statement calling Skaji's death a "crime" and saying that as Israel is the occupying force in Jerusalem, it is responsible for it.

"It's time for Jordan to stop playing this double game", the prime minister's office said in a statement.

There was no comment from either the Jordanian or Palestinian side on the report.

On Friday, Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian youth and wounded more than 10 others during clashes in the occupied West Bank.

Alleged stabber had entered Israel on a tourist visa, according to police, and attacked officer in East Jerusalem area.

Israel says the violence is fueled by a Palestinian campaign of incitement. He is due to travel to the Middle East this month and meet separately with Israeli and Palestinian leaders on May 22-23.
