UK Labour leader accuses Theresa May of 'pandering' to Trump

The Prince of Wales shakes hands with Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams during a visit to the British ambassador’s residence in Glencairn Dublin

Mr Corbyn also ruled out any further "hand holding" with President Donald Trump when it came to foreign defence policy, adding that he would be willing to stand up to the United States commander in chief. Some 47% approve of the way she is running the country whereas just 23% approve of the way Corbyn is running Labour.

The leaked draft - initially published by the Daily Mirror, The Daily Telegraph, BBC and other news outlets - suggested that Mr Corbyn, a left-wing politician, had decisively broken with the centrist legacy of most of his recent Labour predecessors, most notably that of former prime minister Tony Blair, who won three general elections.

A senior party source was forced to clarify Mr Corbyn's remarks and reiterate that Labour policy was to renew the four missile submarines that carry Trident nuclear weapons, as voted by MPs past year.

Notably, Shadow Defence Secretary Nia Griffith, a supporter of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the UK's annual 2% of GDP military spending commitment, was absent from the event.

Meanwhile, Armed Forces Minister Mike Penning said Mr Corbyn is "pretending he's got what it takes to keep us safe".

Conservatives and Labour have between them taken up around 70% of TV coverage and 84% of election stories in the national press, while the Liberal Democrats, Ukip and Scottish National Party have seen their exposure reduced from the 2015 contest, found a report by Loughborough University's Centre for Research in Communication and Culture.

Corbyn will add: "The "war on terror" which lies behind these interventions has failed. But I am not a pacifist", he said.

"I accept that military action, under global law and as a genuine last resort, is in some circumstances necessary".

Labour's deputy leader has warned a "Margaret Thatcher-style majority" for Theresa May will give her governance "without much accountability".

Under Mr Corbyn, Labour will return to the "ethical" foreign policy championed by Robin Cook.

It's a statement which no other major party leader in British politics has felt the need to make since, perhaps, George Lansbury, the pacifist Labour leader in the 1930s.

The Labour leader said wars have increased insecurity "at home", and, "they have caused destabilization and devastation overseas".

"Corbyn is simply too weak and shambolic to stand up to terrorists and tyrants who want to do us harm".

"The best defence for Britain is a government actively engaged in seeking peaceful solutions to the world's problems".
