Disney's unreleased film claimed to be held for ransom by hackers

Bob Iger

The Disney hack comes as studios and production outfits have dealt with increasing security threats presented by hackers. Considering that film's release is many months away and the fact that Disney would probably pay anything to stop it from being leaked, it's safe to say that we're not talking about Star Wars here. While the affected movie hasn't been announced, Disney's upcoming big-budget films include "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" and "Cars 3".

Deadline later confirmed that the film in question is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

In 2014 hackers paralysed Sony Pictures and demanded the studio cancel distribution of The Interview, a comedy about a plot to assassinate North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un. Disney is now working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to bring and end to this situation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the story, the hackers purportedly threatened to release the film in sections, starting with the first five minutes, until the ransom demand is met. Hackers have been demanding payment via bitcoin from organizations and individual consumers to regain access to their computers locked by the ransomware.

SmackDown Recap: Jinder Mahal Pins Randy Orton
Orton was out first, and he was met with a challenger as Mahal predictably came out to talk and stare him down. Rusev demanded a title opportunity at Money in the Bank a couple weeks ago, but he has heard nothing.

After the streaming giant refused to pay the ransom, hackers released all ten episodes of the upcoming set to bow in on June 9.

But Iger insists the company bosses have chosen not to pay up.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise has pulled in an nearly incomprehensible $3.72 billion in worldwide box office since the first installment in 2003.
