Jeffco board unanimously approves three-year contract for new superintendent

Jamestown residents voted at Lincoln Elementary School on Tuesday, one of three polling places in the city where voters decided whether to approve the school district's 2017-18 budget and who should be on the school board.

PHOENIXVILLE Despite some school officials saying they thought there was still some work to do, it appears property owners in the Phoenixville Area School District should get ready for another tax hike.

"You do have a lot to say".

It would also be the district's seventh tax increase in the last eight years.

In 2016-17 the budget totaled $117.72 million and was supported by the collection of $76.62 million in local taxes.

In the Board of Education race for three seats, incumbents Rachelle Nardelli (904), Denise Kness (874) and Glen Malia (850) earned new three-year terms, defeating Michelle Browne (309) and Gnesia Feliu (174). Not only are deep cuts being discussed, but these districts will need a super majority, or 60 percent, of the vote for their budgets to pass, because the proposals exceed the tax cap. The library proposition also passed 143-21.

As part of the meeting's consent agenda, board members approved a number of resignations/retirements from classified employees, including: Lori Libra (Technology and Data Coordinator), Kelly Harkless (Administrative Secretary), Dawn Crossman (Paraprofessional), Annie Nelson (Paraprofessional), Nikki Shaw (Title 7 Liaison) and Zachariah Priem (Custodian). It restricts school districts and municipalities to 2 percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is less. For the board candidates, Penny Barry got 189 votes, write-in candidate Susan Hrovat got 132 votes, and Darren Wilson got 92 votes. Of the three candidates vying for the school board's only vacancy, Steven Smith was declared the victor, with 227 votes.

The district has reserves to cover the difference, but those will start to diminish for next year if the funds never arrive.

The Canajoharie Central School District's proposed $21.9 million budget passed, 278-172.

District voters approved the $57.3 million spending plan for 2017-18 by a margin of 723 to 112.

"The federal budget has not been passed yet, but it's my understanding we will receive federal tax funds for the '17-'18 year", Bodamer said.

Districts like Liverpool tell NewsChannel9 that they will balance the budget with fund balance dollars, but that it is not a sustainable measure.

Todd McFee (179 votes), Jeffrey L. Jones (173) and David Przestrzelski (161) were all re-elected to three-year school board terms. The tax levy, or the amount to be raised by property taxes, will be $4,715,842, or a.98 percent increase, and the tax rate per $1,000 assessed value is $17.18.

Amscan's share of the 6.46 percent tax levy increase is 5.10 percent, bringing the share to be paid by the average homeowner in Chester down to 1.36 percent - at or below levels from four years ago.

The Randolph Central School District proposed a 2017-18 budget of $20,294,455 - a 19.20 percent increase from 2007-08. David Locastro (504) and Margaret Vensel (612) were elected to three-year terms on the school board.
