Maria Sharapova to play in Wimbledon qualifying at Roehampton

Sharapova granted Birmingham wildcard

The five-times grand slam champion, who recently served a 15-month doping ban, learned on Tuesday she would not be given a wildcard into the French Open, with the question over whether Wimbledon will grant her one as yet unanswered.

Maria Sharapova announced Friday she will play in a qualifying tournament in advance of Wimbledon after she was denied a wild-card exemption into the French Open.

But Sharapova has now signed a two year deal with the Lawn Tennis Association to participate at Birmingham's Aegon Classic. I am so grateful and excited to be playing the event again!

Sharapova has accumulated enough points already to enter Wimbledon qualifying but an All England Club sub-committee will meet on June 20 to decide which players will be fast-tracked into the first round proper.

Russia's Maria Sharapova has confirmed she will not ask for a wildcard entry for the Wimbledon Championships, opting to compete in the qualifying rounds.

The five-time grand slam tournament victor will climb into the top 200 on Monday, high enough to earn a trip to London, albeit for a Wimbledon match programme that will begin earlier than usual.

Jose Mourinho already has Europa League final squad in mind
The former Germany captain recently spoke of his frustration at playing at a lower level of football. Winning that competition carries entry into the Champions League group stages.

Although having no place in the WTA rankings earlier in the year due to the previously imposed suspension, the world's former No. 1 Sharapova was granted wildcards for tennis tournaments in Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome.

There had been question marks over whether she would even be fit enough to take part at Wimbledon after retiring against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in Rome but her acceptance of the wildcard to the event in Edgbaston, which starts on June 17, is a sign that the injury is not serious.

She has denied using it for any performance-enhancing objective, and an initial two-year ban was cut on appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which concluded that while she committed an anti-doping violation there was "no significant fault" on her part.

"I do not agree with is the basis put forward by the French Tennis Federation for their decision with respect to Maria Sharapova", said Simon.

Sharapova won her first grand slam singles title at Wimbledon in 2004, surprising Serena Williams in the final.
