Election 2017: Lib Dems pledge to scrap 'Orwellian' bulk surveillance powers

Senior Lib Dem Sir Simon Hughes, who is the candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, said: "Too many Londoners are being left behind by our broken housing market".

He said the reaction to his haircut has been mixed, with a lot of people questioning why he chose to dedicate a space on the side of his head to Tim Farron's party.

It would allow first-time buyers to purchase homes for the same cost as renting, where each monthly payment steadily buys you a share in the home.

The Liberal Democrats have also said they would introduce a Father's Month - an additional month of paid parental leave for fathers, to encourage greater sharing of parental responsibilities.

The party promises option to remain in the bloc if British voters reject final Brexit deal.

Mr Farron has previously dismissed questions about the future of his leadership, claiming he is exclusively focused on winning on June 8.

And in an appeal to voters to support the Lib Dems, he said: "Theresa May and Nigel Farage's cold, mean-spirited Britain is not the Britain I love. A vote for the Liberal Democrats can change Britain's future".

The rent-to-own initiative is one of the flagship policies revealed in the party's General Election manifesto.

The Lib Dem manifesto will set out a series of policies which the party said are created to help children and young people.

Former CIA director worried about Russian meddling
A group of Democrats on the Senate Banking Committee has voted against confirming a high-ranking Treasury Department official. He said the Russian official denied such interference but also said he would relay the concern to President Vladimir Putin.

The prime minister's Conservative Party has surged in the polls in recent months, now leading with 49 percent of the vote according to a YouGov poll published on May 12.

It will also allocate £420 million to protect the pupil premium in real terms up to 2022 and £165 million for improved continuing professional development for teachers.

And the party has promised a "responsible and realistic" £100bn fund for infrastructure investment, which will be used to build 300,000 homes a year by 2022.

The Lib Dems claim they will prevent 40,000 premature deaths a year by cutting air pollution and more than double the production of green electricity to 60% by 2030.

The Lib Dems would assemble a constitutional convention to "deliver home rule to each of the nations of a strong, federal United Kingdom".

Johnson later told BBC News it was more likely the Lib Dem's 1p across-the-board income tax increase would definitely raise the £6bn they want, as oppose to Labour's proposals to tax high-earners more.

They say the budget would be balanced for day-to-day spending by the following year - though the United Kingdom would still borrow cash for major one-off capital infrastructure projects.

"That's why the Liberal Democrats will not enter into coalition with either Theresa May's Conservatives or Jeremy Corbyn's Labour".
