Gianforte Wins Montana Special Election After Misdemeanor Assault Charge

On Wednesday, the eve of the election, Gianforte allegedly body slammed Ben Jacobs, a Jewish reporter for the British Guardian newspaper, after Jacobs asked a question about health care reform, a key issue in the campaign. A smattering of his supporters responded with chuckles and comments. According to audio footage and witness testimony of Fox News reporters, Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck, threw him to the floor, and punched him in the face, breaking his glasses and putting him in the hospital.

And in response to the Fox News reporters who detailed Gianforte's alleged assault, Meyers said, "Here's a sentence I never thought I'd say, 'Thank you Fox News for telling us the truth'". "I took an action I can't take back and I am not proud of what happened". And I'm sorry to each one of you, that we had to go through this.

But after he was declared the victor, Gianforte apologized for the attack.

The apology came after several GOP lawmakers called for Gianforte to say he was sorry to Jacobs.

Election 2017: Lib Dems pledge to scrap 'Orwellian' bulk surveillance powers
The Lib Dem manifesto will set out a series of policies which the party said are created to help children and young people. The rent-to-own initiative is one of the flagship policies revealed in the party's General Election manifesto .

Republican leaders were largely quiet in the lead-up to poll closures. Three Montana news publications withdrew their endorsements, and even House Speaker Paul Ryan condemned Gianforte's actions.

"That is wrong and should not have happened", Ryan said Thursday. Because Montana clearly doesn't give a shit that the man they've chosen to represent them in Washington, D.C. will lay a beatdown on someone for simply doing their job. "He will bring that experience to Congress, where he will be a valuable voice in the House Republican Conference".

A few conservatives, including Rush Limbaugh, jokingly said about the incident that maybe an attack on a reporter would help any candidate win in Montana. With that context, is it really surprising that Gianforte ended up winning Montana's special election anyway? Gianforte had held his party's nominee at an arm's length but during the special election, he embraced the president, welcoming Vice President Mike Pence and Donald Trump Jr. for campaign visits and using the president's "Drain the swamp" catchphrase. "Greg Gianforte should not be sworn in as a member of the House of Representatives while his assault case is still pending in court". "Rob Quist is too liberal for Montana-he is very liberal", Daines told Politico.

Apparently many Montana voters approve of liberals being body slammed and pummeled."Montana voters didn't pass judgment on initial allegations". Both candidates in the Montana contest were seen as flawed, but Quist in particular was a weak recruit for Democrats.
