Dufner leads at midpoint of Memorial Tournament

Jordan Spieth watches his shot on the 10th hole during the first round of the Memorial golf tournament Thursday

By the end of the day, his nearest challenger was Daniel Summerhays, who was third in the US PGA championship previous year and yesterday shot a 69 to lie five shots off Dufner.

Victorian youngster Brett Coletta, playing just his second US PGA Tour event, shot 72 to remain at three under (tied 27th) and is five shots ahead of countryman Cameron Smith (73) at two over. Daniel Summerhays is in second at minus-nine for the tournament.

"Honestly, I've got so much to think about out there right now, " Summerhays said.

Dufner was still tied for the lead when his wedge on the par-5 11th spun back down the green and into the water, leading to double bogey.

His only blemish so far was a bogey on the par-four 18th in the first round, but the OH native claimed his revenge by sinking his second shot for eagle on that hole yesterday.

"Today was pretty pathetic on all accounts, so have to play better tomorrow", he said.

Dufner, whose final moment of indignity came on No. 18, where he lost his tee shot in the creek to the left of the fairway and bogeyed to close out a 77, is 9-under along with Bubba Watson and Justin Thomas.

White Sox add Cuban OF Robert in deal that costs team $52M
He followed up a six-inning effort at Seattle by limiting a Detroit lineup sans Ian Kinsler and Miguel Cabrera to four hits. The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Justin Upton scored on a groundout by John Hicks .

Lingmerth had no such problems: "I caught some breaks when I missed the fairway and still had some fairly good opportunities from the rough", he told golf Channel. "I hung in there", said the 2015 US Open champion, who finished equal second at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth last week.

Dufner, a Northeast Ohio native and 2013 PGA Championship victor, shot 65-65 for 14-under through two rounds. Dufner had a pair of three-putts, and he twice missed birdie putts from 6 feet.

"I've never walked through this door", he said.

Bubba Watson overcame a heckler on the 18th hole with one last birdie for a 68. He made three bogeys and a triple bogey in the first round, but has only made three bogeys since then.

So, after it looked as if a Dufner had put this tournament to sleep before the weekend began, a real, live competition has broken out at Muirfield, where a Sunday shootout looms. Spieth started the back nine with two straight birdies, but followed with two straight bogeys. The two-time Masters champion fired a four-under 68, highlighted by a six-under 30 on his back nine. "I'll probably hit a few putts with the hands shaking and everything like that".

Co-leader Dufner has also had a quiet season, with just one top-10, but one would not have known it by the way he dismantled Muirfield Village. It's nice to actually be here on the weekend after missing three straight cuts here. He wound up finishing one back of Kevin Kisner, and Spieth brought his form to Ohio.

It was a tough day, too, for former world number one Jason Day, who had six bogeys and three birdies in a three-over 75.
