Electricity cut at Navalny's offices in Moscow

Putin critic Navalny, eyeing power, organizes anti-graft protests

Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny was detained by police outside his apartment in southern Moscow after calling on supporters to mount an unsanctioned protest near the Kremlin, his supporters said. Navalny was arrested, along with hundreds of others, and was jailed for 15 days after being convicted of disobeying a police officer.

Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, who organised the protest, was detained near the entrance to his home earlier on Monday as he was heading to the protest venue.

However, Navalny said late on Sunday that he would change the location to Tverskaya Street, Moscow's main avenue near the Kremlin, after he claimed that authorities had pressured firms into refusing to supply his team with sound and video equipment. He said interference had prevented contractors from building a stage at the agreed venue.

Navalny's wife, Yulia, said on his Twitter feed that he was arrested about a half-hour before the demonstration was to begin.

A spokeswoman for Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny says electricity has been cut at Navalny's offices in Moscow.

Navalny's Fund for Fighting Corruption had been providing updates on protests throughout the country Monday. Police arrested 1,500 people nationwide, including more than 1,000 in Moscow, and a handful are being prosecuted for attacking police.

Near-perfect Kiwis take control of America's Cup qualifiers
Emirates Team New Zealand recovered superbly to close the deficit completely by gate 3 as the teams headed into the turn together. Oracle started that series down two points after being penalized for the biggest cheating scandal in America's Cup history.

Although city authorities had agreed to a location for the Moscow protest, Mr Navalny called for it to be moved to one of the city's main thoroughfares.

"Any provocative actions by the protesters will be viewed as threat to public order and immediately thwarted", the police said.

In statements to a local radio station, Moscow's police chief Vladimir Chernikov warned that officers would detain anyone caught breaching peace with placards and slogans.

The video, which played a central role in galvanizing protesters for the March 26 demonstrations, was published briefly on the websites of the regional prosecutor's office in the central city of Yaroslavl and the St. Petersburg regional administration.

In March, thousands joined protests in nearly 100 cities across Russian Federation, angered by a report Navalny published accusing Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev of corruption.

On everyone's lips is the huge protest on Monday to demand an inquiry into corruption at the highest echelons of power. They are at the headquarters of Alexei Navalny, in the city of Ulyanovsk, 870 km east of Moscow.
