WannaCry virus cancels speeding fines in Australia

Traffic cameras in Victoria infected by WannaCry ransomware

The ransomware has managed to work its way into 55 cameras including red light cameras created to capture images of drivers jumping red lights at highway intersections, and speed monitoring cameras.

Human error by a maintenance worker poking in a malware-infected USB stick was blamed for the infection.

While the cameras have been operating normally, notes the Victorian department of justice, those found to have been handed incorrect fines, they will be scratched from the system.

"A system patch has been applied, which prevents the spread of the virus", the spokesperson told AW3, the local radio station who uncovered the outbreak.

WA Police said yesterday it had immediately contacted the providers of its speed and red light cameras to establish whether they were also at risk.

The infection came to light when someone noticed a number of speed and red-light cameras were rebooting themselves more often than usual.

Squad video of Castile shooting expected to be made public
The 29-year-old garnered national headlines during the 2016 season for kneeling during the national anthem. Ramsey County Attorney John Choi charged Yanez with second degree manslaughter for shooting Castile.

"Police are continuing to liaise with service providers to ensure that the camera systems operated in WA are protected from these types of attacks and to ensure that the security and credibility of our systems is maintained".

The report - billed as "exclusive" - said the WannaCry virus had hit private camera operator RedFlex, which operates most traffic cameras in Victoria. "The remaining sites will be rectified in the next couple of days".

While fines may be cancelled, Neville and Police believe the infected cameras have continued to work accurately.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Guenther said his key message was that traffic cameras saved lives.

"I think people have no reason to lose confidence in the road camera safety system", he said.

Just over a month ago, a nasty piece of ransomware called "WannaCry" began infecting PCs all across the world at an alarming rate.
