'Cars 3' races to first place at the box office

Pixar's Cars 3 raced to the front of the pack at this weekend's box office with an opening-weekend domestic gross of $54 million and a foreign take of $21million for a $75 million worldwide bow.

"Cars 3" had the worst opening in the series' history and one of the lowest debut totals for the Pixar brand.

As expected, the third installment in Disney and Pixar's $1 billion "Cars" franchise easily took the top spot, but its estimated $53.5 million in earnings told a more complicated tale.

It was a big victor for Cars 3 at the box office this weekend!

However, Patty Jenkins" directorial "Wonder Woman' continues its impressive run at the box-office falling a scant 30 percent in the U.S.to 40.8 million Dollars for a domestic total of 274.6 million USD. In a surprising third place with $27 million is "All Eyez on Me", the biopic on the late rapper, Tupac Shakur. Two other new movies, "47 Meters Down" and "Rough Night", placed fifth and seventh, respectively. It is directed by Brian Fee, a storyboard artist on Cars (2006) and Cars 2, and stars the voices of Owen Wilson, Cristela Alonzo, Armie Hammer, Bonnie Hunt, Larry the Cable Guy, Nathan Fillion, Kerry Washington and Lea DeLaria.

TRACKING THE TROPICS: Monitoring two developing storms near the Gulf of Mexico
While forecast models are fairly uniformed on the development of a weak system, where it goes is still much less certain. Pensacola city officials said Monday that they are monitoring the storm and taking necessary precautions.

"Cars 3" was only Disney's last hit movie to dominate the box office this year.

Despite being knocked down to second place, Wonder Woman still had an impressive showing.

The shark-infested thriller 47 Meters Down debuted to $11.5 million which was just a shade above the studio's $10 million expectations. Sony's R-rated bachelorette party gone wrong pic earned only $8.1 million against a $20 million budget.

"It is genuinely a amusing movie that was made at the right price, and there is a place for Rough Night as summer counter-programming in the coming weeks", said Sony's distribution chief Adrian Smith. The project combines the talents of director and co-writer Lucia Aniello, co-writer and actor Paul W. Downs, and star Ilana Glazer - the three are frequent collaborators on Comedy Central's "Broad City" and "Time Traveling Bong".
