DUP head: Talks with UK Conservatives going well

On paper, it looks simple enough.

"Going overseas and being seen to be the prime minister and talking to the president of France.is a classic move to shore up authority at home", said Colin Talbot, professor of government at the University of Manchester. Yet three days on the prime minister is still struggling to scramble a coalition deal together.

A deal between British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) of Northern Ireland could be delayed until next week after a massive fire engulfed the Grenfell Towers in London early on Wednesday killing at least six people and injuring 74 others, DUP sources said.

May on Monday met with Tory backbenchers to discuss her leadership in light of her botched election campaign, which left her party with fewer seats than it had before.

Theresa May desperately needs the Democratic Unionist Party's 10 seats to pass legislation.

Mrs Foster said gay rights were social issues for the Northern Irish parliament to deal with.

Ireland's Prime Minister Enda Kenny has warned May that deal might endanger peace. The Conservatives are considering an arrangement in which the Northern Ireland party backs May on the budget and her confidence motions and the DUP stands to make huge gains from the deal.

But a deal with the DUP also risks destabilizing Northern Ireland by increasing the influence of pro-British unionists.

Spillover fire from Syria reaches northern Israel
The military said no one was injured in the incident, but asked civilians to avoid the area surrounding the border with Syria. Syrian state-run news agency SANA reported several people were killed in the Israeli strikes.

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, which saw its number seats and share of the vote increase, said there could be another election this year or early in 2018 after last Thursday's vote produced no clear victor.

Meanwhile, MPs will return to Westminster on Tuesday, the first time since the election.

If that happens, Corbyn will demand a chance to try to form a government by uniting progressive factors in the House of Commons.

May made clear the Brexit negotiations would begin on schedule despite the political uncertainty at home.

There is speculation that May, who had backed a 'hard Brexit, ' will now have to adopt a softer stance when negotiating with European Union officials in order to win support in the House of Commons. But depending on what kind of deal takes shape, the vocal opponents of the European Union among the Conservative Party and general public who had hoped to end policies such as freedom of movement may end up severely disappointed.

Mrs Foster arrived in Downing Street with Nigel Dodds at lunchtime for negotiations with the Prime Minister but they decamped to Parliament to allow Mrs May and the DUP's deputy leader to speak in the Commons.

Mr Gove, who a year ago brought Boris Johnson's leadership bid to an end, said it was "wonderful to be sitting alongside" the Foreign Secretary in Cabinet.

David Davis, the chief minister for Brexit, and Boris Johnson, the foreign minister, have done their best to dampen rumours of an uprising, with Davis calling them "the height of self-indulgence" and Johnson telling a whatsapp group of MPs to get behind the prime minister.
