Qatar's Foreign Minister Meets Rex Tillerson: Saudi Demands Are 'Unreasonable and False'

Qatar has been accused by Saudi and other nations in the region of aiding terrorist groups, leading to a diplomatic row which has culminated in a blockade of the country.

The diplomatic spat has seen many liners cancel calls to Qatar while Qatari authorities have scrambled to fix new shipping routes linking Doha to destinations in Oman and India to ensure daily supplies get in.

Several South Asian migrants employed as domestic workers and farmers are stranded in Saudi Arabia after their Qatari employers were asked to leave the kingdom.

Heading into Tuesday evening's meeting with Kuwait's minister of state for cabinet affairs, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Sabah, Tillerson said, "We hope all the parties will continue to talk to one another in good faith".

The demands included, among others, that Qatar shut down the Al Jazeera media network, close a Turkish military base and scale down ties with Iran.

The energy-rich Gulf state has been plunged into crisis since Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt severed all ties earlier this month over the country's alleged ties to terrorism, sending the stock market plummeting and panicked citizens to supermarkets where they emptied shelves of food. The Guardian has reported the Qatar as the richest country in the world in terms of GDP per capita.

Joe Scarborough took aim at Al Jazeera on Wednesday's episode of Morning Joe, slamming the news organization for being used as a prop to spread disinformation and support terrorism.

The UAE ambassador to Russian Federation told the Guardian newspaper on Wednesday that the Gulf Arab states were considering fresh economic sanctions on Qatar.

The minister will explore the challenges and prospects for resolving the Gulf crisis, and comment on the list of demands presented by the Saudi-led coalition, it added. Lack of change in Doha's behavior, the newly assertive policies of the Saudi government (including the war in Yemen), President Trump's exhortation in Riyadh to counter Islamic extremism, and the consolidation of power in Saudi Arabia under the young Crown Prince Muhammed Bin Salman combined to bring this situation to a head. It is being told that these demands have been supplied to Qatar through Kuwait.

He added: "We have heard that these demands are non-negotiable, but this violates the principles of global relations".

A 13-point list of demands was then issued by the states, giving Qatar ten days to comply.

Going forward, the USA won't weigh in on which demands Qatar should meet and which are unrealistic, but wants the two sides to figure that out, Nauert said at the briefing Tuesday.

Tillerson's bid to defuse the standoff in the Gulf is backed by the Pentagon and the State Department, which are deeply concerned at the implications for the huge US Al-Udeid air base in Qatar, home to 11,000 American troops and forward headquarters for the US Central Command.
